Dean's Story
After graduating high school, a fellow classmate and high school sweetheart, Ronda Derstein and I were married. After I decided Mechanical Drafting was boring, I did what I had always wanted to do; join the Army. Ronda, I and our four children (2 girls and 2 boys) traveled around the world. Over a 28 year career in the Army, I had been stationed in Colorado Springs, CO; Camp Casey, Korea; Fort Stewart GA; Hunter Army Airfield Savannah, GA; Wertheim Germay; Giebelstadt, Germany and Fort Sill, OK. I retired from Active Duty in 2011 as a Command Sergeant Major with my last assignment as the Commandant of the Noncommissioned Officer Academy. I had the pleasure of serving as a Forward Observer, Flew OH-58D helicopters during Desert Sto...Expand for more
rm and served as a Task Force CSM in Operation Iraqi Freedom. After military retirement, I worked as a Defense Contractor for a short period, then was lucky enough to become a Department of the Army Civilian. I serve as the Operations Officer for the Directorate of Training and Doctrine at Fort Sill, in Lawton, OK, where all 4 of my children, 6 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren live. The most devastating moment of my life was losing Ronda to a battle with illness that took her from us in 2016, after 33 years of a wonderful, exciting marriage. However, a couple of years later, i met a fantastic woman and we were married just last year. She has 3 kids and 5 grandchildren. So, my family has grown immensely, as has my happiness.
