More about Dean:"1.Dear Mr. Kneeland,
In caring for the elderly, I expect that you hear about many cases when the best efforts fail and death ensues.. Perhaps you may be interested in learning about the superior performance of one of your employees, Dean Cortese, who saved my wife's life. My wife, Mary, has ALS which was causing atrophy of her hands. During the course of several months, her energy level gradually and seriously diminished. Now we know this was caused by a gradual buildup of CO2 in her respiratory system that was poisoning her, but this was not diagnosed at that time. Her cardiac doctor prescribed a cannula to administer oxygen at night. The first night, the oxygen increased the buildup of CO2, because Mary was not exhaling properly, and this triggered a total collapse of her respiratory system during the night.
By the time Dean got to her at about 11 am the next morning, Mary had been comatose for about five hours. We told Dean we had not called 911 because Mary had said repeatedly that she wants to die at home, not in the hospital, and all the family members who by then had gathered in the room agreed with that decision. Dean respected that decision, advised that the chances of survival were small, but said he would do everything possible to try to bring her back. This was November 2, and we told Dean that our goal was to at least get her through Thanksgiving when all our grandchildren would be here. After about two hours, Mary still ap...Expand for more
peared comatose, but Dean said that with his machine he saw signs of hope and wanted to keep trying.
Then, over the next two hours, we first saw a twitch of one eye, then a movement in one hand, she nodded her head in response to a question, then said a single word. After that, her recovery moved quickly. She started speaking in sentences, and before the day was over she was telling stories and making jokes as though it were a family party. Dean spent five hours with her that day -- a long time to spend with any single patient, but she needed it, and it saved her life.
Since that fateful day, Dean has stayed with the case and guided Mary's use of the necessary respiratory equipment. During the first week after her collapse, our goal was still just to ensure that she lasted through Thanksgiving. After that we started talking about through Christmas. Every day since that day when she was turned away from the Pearly Gates, Mary has continued to get a bit stronger and more able to care for herself. Now that we understand what happened and how to prevent it from happening again, the future looks good. Unfortunately, Mary does still have ALS and that will eventually take her from us, but our entire family is extremely grateful to Dean for his skill and dedication that significantly prolonged her life with us.
Sincerely,
Dick
