Deb's Story

Never say never. I learned that lesson from my paternal grandmother. Upset with my Aunt Marquerite, Grandma vowed never to visit her daughter again. A few weeks later, Grandma was dead. I said I'd never attend another class reunion (only went to the five-year) let alone help to plan one. And now, here I am, 30 years after turning a tassel, helping to stuff invitations and to address envelopes for an Oct. 11 gathering. Who'd'a thought it? Certainly not me. With the date in the fall, I'm not sure how many people will be able to attend, especially when factoring in the cost of gasoline and the state of the economy. I just think it would be worth it for members of Peru High School's Class of 1978 to try and attend. Granted, six hours doesn't seem like enough time, but some time is better than no time. I'm not a social butterfly, and I'm not too keen on crowds. I'm a bit of a misfit, and I still don't play well with others. And, I've only kept in close contact with one of my classmates. And yet I've had more fun working with old friends than I ever imagined and enjoyed getting to know others I simply shared classrooms or hallways with. s the morning of graduation. At least, I think it was morning. We'd just left the Country Club, where we'd had a breakfast (or maybe it was a luncheon) and were on our way to the Tig-Arena for a dress rehearsal for graduation that night. Janice was driving her all-too familiar Gremlin when a cat darted in front of her vehicle. Needless to say, it was a memorable moment. And what can I say about Inky Larson? Our moms have played bridge together since we were in diapers. Of all my classmates, it's Inky that I've seen and shared with the most over the years. When somebody asked if anybody knew of the whereabouts of Joe Castro, I couldn't help but laugh out loud. Inky shared her first French kiss with Joe. And how do I know? Because I'll never forget what happened next. It was at a junior high dance, and she went running and screaming out of the gymnasium. "He stuck his tongue in my mouth!" she'd shouted all the way to the bathroom, where she proceeded to stick out her tongue and attempted to wash away any traces of the infraction. Not to sound like a Hallmark card (unless it's Maxine, and she's busy insulting someone), but it's memories like these that can make a reunion. I have to admit I'm looking forward to attending the October get-together, hoping it will serve as a stick to stir up other memories.
