Debbe's Story

Let's see.......since 1979, here's what I've done..... Went to Friends University for one year, and decided college wasn't for me. I started working at Southwest National Bank and stayed there for 4 1/2 years. During that time I married a good friend that graduated from West High, also a '79 grad, but he wasn't ready for marriage yet, so, sadly, he left me after six months. In 1984 I met the love of my life, Mike Shirkey, also a South High Grad, class of 1975. We married on Valentine's Day in 1985. Between '85 and '90 we moved around quite a bit. First to Manhattan, KS where Mike attended Manhattan Christian College for a year. He then came home and finished his degree at Friends University. After that we moved to the Wheaton, Illinois area, but after 9 months figured out we "weren't in Kansas anymore Dorothy." and came home. Shortly after we returned to Wichita, in 1990, our oldest daughter was born. Five years later we added another daughter to the family. And, in true Shirkey tradition, our oldest daughter graduated from South High this past May, class of '08! She graduated #5 in her class, as the Class Salutatorian. WOW!! My posted picture is the four of us at one of her graudation parties. Our youngest will probably attend South, but this year she is in 7th grade at Mayberry. When we in Manhattan, as well as Illinois I continued to work in the banking industry. I also had some short term jobs in secretarial work, however, after we had the girls I quit working to stay home. But, staying home created financial issues, so in 1992 I began selling Tupperware for some xtra income. Much to my surprise, I found my "nitch" and I am now a Director with Tupperware. I have close to 100 gals on my team, drive a company car and make a great income. I have been with Tupperware for over 16 years now ...Expand for more
and can not really see myself doing anything different. I love working out of my home, having the flexibility to set my own hours, but also help financially with the family. This fall (actually as I type this, we take her tomorrow), our oldest daughter is following in her Dad's footsteps and attending Manhattan Christian College in Manhattan, KS. She wants to go into some sort of children's/youth ministry. She has a heart for Jesus and a heart for Children and she will be FABULOUS at this. She will also probably get a degree at KSU while she is there, as she got such a TERRIFIC SCORE On her SAT that her degree at K-State is free! SHe DEFINITELY got her brains from her dad! :) Our youngest, as I said attends Mayberry. Mayberry is now a "Magnet" school and their emphasis is fine arts. Our youngest is a "DRAMA QUEEN" (by her own admission) and she is VERY excited about being in the Advanced Theater class at Mayberry this year. She is also just as smart as her sister, so has all advanced level classes as well. As you can tell, I am very proud of my two girls, as I'm sure everyone else is proud of their children as well. :) Currently Mike works for Accenture BPO services in their Payroll Dept. In addition to the Ministy degree he got, he is a "computer guy" and is very, very , very technical. He can learn almost anything very fast and is a great employee in that environment. We both volunteer on a weekly basis, at the same church I attended in High School, Glenn Park Christian Church. We actually live 2 doors down from the church and get to walk to church! I love that! The most important things in my life are: Jesus Mike Daughters Helping my Tupperware team mates make their dreams come true Thanks for reading my story, hope to see you at the 30th reunion and would love to read your story!!!!
