Debbi Jo's Story
Life
After Lourdes I stayed in Chicago for a year, tried some classes at Daley College and realized I really wanted to be a teacher. After an incredible summer (1984) I traveled some then went to St. Norbert College in Wisconsin in January '85. I did my student teaching in Sydney, Australia and graduated in 1988 with a degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education. I moved to Boston in the summer of '88 and got my Master of Education in Special Education from Boston College in May of '89. I stayed in Boston one more year then moved to Phoenix to escape the cold. That's where I met my husband Don. I taught in Phoenix (special ed. then in the "regular" classroom) until 1998 when I got married and moved to NC which is where we are today. I'm still teaching third grade in a year-round school and enjoying my 4 year old son Billy, two year old daughter Brooklyn and eargerly awaiting our third due in March 06.

Workplace
I got...Expand for more
my first teaching job (7th-8th grade resource room) the year I was in grad school. After grad school I worked for a year in a day school for children with severe emotional and behavioral needs. My class had 8 students, all boys ages 8-12...I LOVED that job! I moved to AZ and taught preschool first in a residential treatment center for children with significant disabilities (learning, emotional and behavioral)then in the public school system. After 3 years in preschool I made the move to the "regular" classroom as more and more students with disabilities were being placed in the "regular" classroom with teachers who either didn't know how to help them or didn't want to help them. I've been working in the public schools ever since in grades PreK - third. I had the unique and wonderful experience of looping with a class in AZ from first through third grade. I'm in NC now and am working part-time in the second grade with 7 other second grade teachers. I would much prefer to stay at home with my kids but that isn't possible just yet. However, with my current job situation I'm home by 1:00 with no work to bring home...it's the best compromise.
