Debbie's Story

Life Wow, guess what? I actually made it to the big 51 and lived through it! It is hard to believe I am not 16 again and running my boyfriends truck into the order pole at the Sonic or running that old Camero around the track in the Powderpuff derby. It is also hard for me to know I have grandbabies big enough to actually know who I am!! Life had been good to me. We all have our ups and downs but because of the elasticity of human nature we seem to snap back, sometimes a little worse for the stretching and sometimes a little better. I was born the oldest daughter of a migratory field worker and a homemaker. Our little family of four moved around alot growing up. Of course if you were moved around alot as a kid you know that entering an new school as the "new kid" always caused major unheavels in your self image. The sly looks, the pushing to see how far you could be pushed, the "who does she think she is" mentality of the young and the "where is my locker" panic of the first couple of days! But, as Mother always said, "this too shall pass, baby girl, this too shall pass". Lord, I miss her. At the grand old age of 7, yours truly went on strike! She threw down her hoe in the middle of 112 acres of cotton and started the long trek back to the truck. Fast on her heels came her Father. Wheeeew now that was an ugly session but she persevered and never picked up a hoe again! At the tender age of 10 my Father decided that if he became a missionary ...Expand for more
he would not have to work. We (as in the Beverly Hillbillies) loaded up the truck but we moved to the Navajo Reservation in Northern NM at a little place called Black Hat. That is where I left my heart and soul. When life gets to be to much for me and I can't get out there to renew, I slow down, breath deep and remember who I am. I close my eyes and see the reds, golds, greens and purples of the approaching sunset, smell the scent of sage on my hands, feel the soft caress of the silent wind on my cheek and "go there" once again. God lives in on and around those mesa's and wide open spaces that are full of grace, age, wisdom and glory. I had two absolutely beautiful daughters who are now grown with children of their own. Of course I did lay the "Mothers Curse" on them, you know the one "I hope you have two girls and they act just like you!!" Of course in even that they fought me, both of them had a son and daughter. But I am sure they will face the challenges that those will bring! God I love them. I now live in a place that is not so good for me. I lost my Mother that three years ago and her Mother 17 days later. My Stepfather, Pop, whom I love beyond belief is here and he is in a wheelchair full time. So I go to him each evening, which I will do as long as is necessary. He loved my Mother and I will always love him. So there, now you know, if there was any interest. Have a great one all...and remember...I am out here pulling for you!
