Debbie's Story

Life...as updated 5/29/09 Greetings from Maryland! I moved to the east coast a couple of years after graduating and have lived in MD and VA. After I discovered there was no money in social work and there weren't any jobs, I fell back on my math skills and went into tax and accounting. In '74 (Doesn't that just sound like a 1000 years ago?) I started my business so it seems like I have been doing this forever! I love my clients and do alot of financial/life planning and work with start up businesses. I married in 1982 and we separated in 2003. We have 2 sons and I have 2 wonderful step-daughters who range from 21 to 35. I learned to scuba dive in the early '80's and became an advanced diver. I still go when I can. At home I have 3 dogs..a Shar-Pei (Chinese wrinkle dog) and two new Great Dane puppies (1 is blue (gray) and one is black)..they are 12 weeks and 40 pounds each! I also have four macaws, Santana and his brother Domini(rescued both)(Harlequin), a Blue and Gold from my mother, Kiko and Jack (Hyacinth). Santana talks and has a huge vocabulary. Loves to ask for, and get, a "shower", drink water from a glass, etc. The best is when he knows he is in trouble and calls himself a "Bad Bird". Shamrock, my mother's cockatiel, whistles the OU fight song! Life is good and I remarried 8/08 and ..now I'm official 'cougar'..Mark, my husband is 41..you can do the math! Not much older than my son-in-law! I live about 25 miles outside of DC in Damascus, MD in Montgomery County. The builder had to leave 22 acres (never to be developed) behin...Expand for more
d four house, one of which is mine. I love it because there are acres of woods and lots of room without being totally isolated. I have a big back porch and love to put the birds in their big cage on the porch, let the dogs run and enjoy friends and family! We are currently turning part of the back porch into a 'bird room'..you'd understand if you had 4 macaws running their beaks all day! You know you trust your kids (older son, Jon) when you let them and a couple of friends do the job...the same ones that used to take the lawn tractor for extended 'trips' and try to do wheelies! I get even with Jon though..in the last few months 3 people have commented when I called him 'Son'.."Oh..I thought he was your husband!" He is so crushed~~~ It pays off to stay crazy with life and have a lot of fun...then people just assume you can't be all that old! I was back in OKC a couple of years ago to see my niece in Weatherford..so much the same..so much is different. Moving to MD was somewhat like going into witness protection...a whole new start. I have been designing jewelry for a few years now and once everything with my mother settles down, I plan to do more show...it is so fun! Take care, Deb Workplace I got into the tax business and became a tax practioner the old fashioned way--in a blizzard! Up to that point, I was just checking math on tax returns. Since I lived in Bethesda and close enough to walk to work, that day I became a tax preparer! Along the way I started my own business and incorporated in 1982: American Financial Services, Inc.
