Debbie's Story

Where to begin? My family moved to Kingsville, TX the day after we graduated from high school. I went to Texas A & I freshman first semester, parents moved to Sherman, TX so I moved back to Lawton for the second semester at Cameron. Got married 12/71, graduated 12/73 with a degree in education but decided teaching wasn't for me so went into the hotel business as a manager trainee with Ramada Inns in OKC. I joined a team that traveled to new acquisitions and converted them to Ramada's accounting, policies & procedures until Ramada transferred me to Arlington, TX to manage the Six Flags Ramada during a transition. Had my first son in 1977 so I quit the traveling to become the District Director's assistant. Moved to the Sherman area in 1979 to help my parents out (I thought! They were healthier than me!!!). :) In early 1984 my son, Jeremy, was diagnosed with a pituitary (brain) tumor. It was excised 03/84 & left him blind and with several life threatening conditions. He's doing good today, it's all water under the bridge. I had my second son, James, in 1986 so took that opportunity to go to Southeastern OK State Univ & got an accounting degree. Opened my own business, sold it in 1993 when I got divorced at Jeremy's request which I gladly complied with. Doesn't say a lot for staying together for the sake of the kids! :) My ex had a hard time accepting Jeremy for who he was after the surgery so that was a no-brainer for me. Took the kids & moved to Austin so Jeremy could go to the school for the blind, became the Controller of 3 computer magazines publishing company. Married Tom in 1994, Tom was transferred to Springfield, MO for one year with the BNSF RR. So before we left I took his 2 boys & Jeremy to a Metallica concert, out in an open field, 28,000 people, on one of the hottest days in August. That was an experience I will never forget. I didn't realize how big it was or where it was until we were almost there. The bo...Expand for more
ys got to pick one concert they wanted to go to (their first!) before we left Austin and this was it. Alice in Chains was supposed to be the other main band but they canceled. Other bands there that day were Fight, Suicidal Tendencies and some other God awful name to give you an idea of how my day went. Metallica was really good but we had to suffer through the other bands. I got to be with the kids though & they were so excited that it made it all worth it. Tom was transferred permanently to the FW command center in 1995 so we bought a house in the country in Azle but FW is rapidly closing in. I've had the opportunity to be the Controller for several companies since we moved to FW. Some good, some bad but I've seen a lot of really cool things. I've stood inside multi-million $ jets that belonged to the Foreign Prime Minister of Qatar, the Detroit Pistons DC-9, the President of China, Trump, Saudi Princes. I've seen U.S. Marshalls' seize a Saudi Prince's plane too. Who said accounting has to be boring??? I retired 01/17 to spend more time with Tom due to his declining health. He died exactly six months later. It was a major blow but I'm coming back to life now. Since his death I've painted rooms, furniture, my fireplace, and built a 23' X 20' catio by myself. I dug 30' of holes with a shovel. Manual labor will definitely take your mind off of things. It was good for me and I'm stronger now than I've ever been. Now I'm going to remodel a couple of rooms & Jeremy is going to move in with me. I have recently gotten some accounting clients, and I'm starting a partnership with a friend for a venture that is totally outside my lane that will hopefully help benefit the animal welfare community. We'll see how that goes. I'm big into animal rescue and currently have 4 dogs and 13 cats (hence, the catio). I've had a lot of ups & a lot of major downs in life but everything is a learning experience if you look at it the right way.
