Debbie's Story

I am blessed to have reached reached 69; at times it seems like it happened overnight! I got married right after high school and 7 years later I began having children. Bethany and Jonathan were 19 months apart. They gave me more delight as they grew up than I ever could have imagined, but through them I also saw how much I needed to depend on the grace and mercy of God. I married a month after graduation. I worked for the Orange County Assessor's Office for a few years then as a couple we pursued a calling to serve God and invest in the lives of others through The Salvation Army. After 2 years of intense training I served nearly 5 years as an officer 1 yr. at the training college, and then in Laramie and Cheyenne, Wyoming. I continued to want to minister to hurting people aside from our regular Salvation Army duties and decided to become a hospital chaplain in Laramie, Wyoming. A critical family situation arose not long after our transfer to Cheyenne, Wyoming, and I had no choice but to leave this work I loved so much.. A few years later I found joy in becoming a para-professional (teachers assistant) and later a school secretary in an elementary school. After 35 years, I’m now retired from The Moreland School District in San. Jose, CA. In my years as an aide I also worked at an engineering firm, then later became a...Expand for more
private tutor. When working in Special Education and having my own tutoring business, I began to see that I needed to be able to help kids who had reading disorders, specifically dyslexia, so I trained to be a Dyslexia Consultant and now remotely tutor kids in The Barton Reading and Spelling System. I was divorced in 1991, after 20 years of marriage. In 2002 I was privileged to marry David Turnbull, who is my best friend, and who encourages me to continue to grow, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, all the while causing me to roar with laughter. Our favorite things to do are to read together, have lengthy discussions, and walk the beautiful beaches of Northern California. Together, David and I have 6 children and 11 grandchildren. In June 2008 we suffered the tragic loss of our 28 year old son, Jonathan. The mercy of God is evident as we have worked through this and developed strategies for relating to our other adult children, as well as for managing our aging bodies😊 You will probably agree with me in that I wish I knew then (in High School) what I know now. My parents and my only sibling, Ron, are deceased; I miss my family of origin so much, but thank God I've lived long enough to appreciate what they went through for me! I pray for wisdom and grace to continue to fulfill the purpose I was created for.
