Debbie's Story
Life
After graduating from Overton, I worked at Goldsmith's for a few years as I was attending Memphis State. I also sold shoes at Stegall Shoes and managed the store until they closed. My degree is in Marketing. I interviewed for a job with Pfizer Labs and was hired to work in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1982. I am still in Little Rock, but I traded in my pharmaceutical sales career when I married Robert A. Murphy, M.D. He graduated from Rhodes in '81, but I did not know him then. We have 2 children, Emily, age 20 and Robert, Jr., age 17. We also have 4 dogs. I stay busy taking care of my children, dogs, and husband now.
I have served on the School Board for Pulaski County Special School district, but I am now serving on...Expand for more
the Governor's task force for Talented and Gifted Education. I work part time for the Catering Company that does the catering for shows at Verizon Arena. I also am a stage hand and a member of the local stagehand union.
Although I lost my run for State Representative, it was a very worthwhile and meaningful experience. I know new adventures are on my horizon!

Fast forward a few years, I have been divorced since 2010, and I have returned to Memphis to care for my aging parents. I work at Macy's Oak Court as a fragrance vendor in the Men's Department. I enjoy spending time with my dogs, gardening, traveling, and cooking. My two kids are now grown, and I have recently become a grandmother!
