Debbie's Story
Life
I have lived in Texas since 1978. I met my future husband, Sparky, at Abilene Christian University and we married in 1981. I graduated from Texas A&M in 1982 and taught school for a couple of years then started a family. We had our son, Austin, in 1985 and daughter, Brooke, in 1987. We moved just outside New Orleans in 1992 so my husband could oversee a Toyota dealership owned by his family. It was there my son was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer and he passed away in July, 1995, just a month short of his 10th birthday. now live in Magnolia. I have taught off and on in the last few years and my husband runs our dealership, Gullo Ford Mercury, in Conroe. Growing up in Dearborn and ending up with a Ford dealership is a little surreal, but the car business has been very good to us. My daughter is 15, learning to drive and will start 10th grade in the fall. We are involved with a group called Parents Against Cancer and Sparky has been instrumental in helping them raise over a million dollars for Texas Children's Hospital Cancer Research Center.
