Debbie's Story
I am married to Mark King (26 years) and together we have four children: Kim 43 (my daughter); Jeni 37 (my step-daughter); Zack 22 (our son) and Cass 19 (our son). We have three grandchildren. We live in Carpinteria, CA. I am a real estate broker and I have owned a real estate company in Carpinteria since 1982. It was never on my list of what I wanted to grow up to be, but here I am, a 62 yr old real estate broker with over 30 years experience. I was unwilling to fit my whole life onto the questionnaire. I
don't follow all rules well. I'm not sorry about that either.
I love to travel, anywhere, anytime. I have been to Costa Rica, Japan, China, Peru, Spain, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, across the US and throughout all of Mexico. Did I mention that I love to travel! I currently volunteer with Aeromedicos, a medical/dental volunteer group that has a clinic in Baja. We fly in with small planes once a month and provide what services we can. I go as a translator and quasi-nurse. I go for the adventure. I go because we always get to dance on an evening after the clinic at a funky disco in Mulege.
I collect weird folkart, religious icons from all religions, and cookbooks. I love to cook, bake, garden, raise chickens, watch edgy movies, dance whenever I can and listen to great music. I rarely watch TV. I'm pretty artistic. I love the few paintings I have done and every drawing I have made. I love to put on parties. The biggest one I ever created was the California Avocado Festival for about 100,000 people. I did that over and over again for 15 years as a volunteer. I even still like avocados.

a community mover/shaker for years but notice that I now spend less time looking at what the community needs and more time looking at what I need and what my family needs. If I have gotten selfish in my 60's, I think it is a good thing. I do volunteer in the local elementary school and teach classical music appreciation to 4th and 5th grade classes. It's fun to introduce classical pieces to kids who have only heard rap and hip-hop. They are surprised when they recognize the classical music from video games and movies or cartoons. I nagged my sons a lot to get them to practice music and in exchange I learned a lot about classical music. They now play beautiful music on cello, classical guitar and violin, so I won all around.
I love to do things that make me feel really alive but aren't too dangerous: Fly in small planes with experienced pilots; speak in front of large groups of people; rappel down inside caves with a harness on; travel to foreign countries where I don't speak the language and arrive with no reservations; drive through snow storms with the windows down; hike to small beautiful lakes in the sierras; horseback ride to a volcano in Mexico and then ride back in a thunderstorm. I live life on a reasonably safe edge.
I have visited with Westchester High Lydian girlfriends every year since the last reunion. We bring back memories for each other that put smiles to our faces. We remind each other that our old friends are thinking us of all the time. I know I think of them, yet it is surprising to find that they also think of me. I am really looking forward to this reunion more than ever before.
