Debby's Story

Having spent my most impressionable school years bouncing around; California to Arkansas, and then back to California, I made a vow to myself that once I had children I would stay put. I wanted my kids to attend the same school from start to finish. Of course I made a vow to myself to marry only once, eat healthy, exercise regularly, and be a proactive member of society, as well. Admittingly, I failed miserably, at one time or another, at all of my promises except for the staying put one. Rewind a little, I moved from California (4th grade), leaving lots of friends, to Arkansas, making lots of friends, and then leaving those friends to move back to California (10th grade), only to start over making new friends and then leaving off to college. My head still spins trying to remember names and faces. But I have to say my heart is full of great memories and many, many nameless friends- nameless only because I can not for the life of me remember names- just faces. I attended Chapman University and majored in Communication (Broadcast Journalism) and minored in English, and received my master in education ten years later. My intention was to go into the field of news broadcasting, but I accidentally turned a corner after graduation. South Central needed teachers and I needed money. Little did I know that I would fall in love with teaching and never get back to news broadcasting. I still love my job, 22 years later as a high school English teacher. In the mist of my studies, and teaching, I did find time to get married and have 4 wonderful kids; Tyler (21), Korey (20), Mandie (16) and Jacque (13). I was married for 9 years to my kids dad; not unhappily but not my soul mate. I am now married to my soul mate, John, and have been for 11 years. John¿s daughter, Tina (24), blended perfectly with my four kids. As vowed, I have lived in Los Alamitos/ Rossmoor California, maybe not in the same house BUT the same school district for 22 years; my current resident is my home of 10 years. You would think that living close to the beach would give you the opportunity to appreciate a slower pa...Expand for more
ce of live. Of course it should, if we were not chasing around our kids and supporting their passions. When I am not grading essays, then John and I are somewhere that involves the kids: watching Jacque attempt his new skate trick, cheering Mandie on at a softball game, listening to Korey¿s newest song, having an intellectually stimulating argument with Tyler, or listening to Tina¿s newest adventure in her Disneyland career. John and I do find time to enjoy conversation and a glass of good wine with each other, with extended family, and or with friends-Although, at times, it feels to infrequent, we know our kids are growing up and soon we will miss the chaos. Maybe you can hear my voice in my narrative and figure out who I am and what I have become.. I¿ll share something I wrote for my students; I use it as a means to get to know me quickly so I can play school with them sooner- I am¿ I am about being real I am about being a fanatic and being ecstatic, being gloomy, melancholy or just so so I am about cheese burgers and fries, sushi and sashimi, health or fried, filling the void without gluttony I am about being optimistic I am about being high without smoking, poking, snorting or ingesting I am about presenting myself intelligently, and counting my blessings I am about laughing at myself I am about pulling you up.. cheering you on.. pushing you forward I am about people Whatever floats their boat, cranks their tractor, blows their skirt up¿ Whatever turns them on, makes them happy, makes them smile I am about respecting ones space and ones place I am about being true to oneself I am not about¿ Intolerance I am not about¿ judging, disrespecting, dishonesty, or manipulation I am not about Prada, Abracrombie and Fitche or Dooney and Burke rather I am about what works right, feels right and has the right price I am not about impressing people with my brilliance, my education, zip code or bank account I am not about you agreeing with me, looking up to me, or following me I am about teaching you to fish rather than throwing fish at you I am about being real..
