Deborah's Story

School I attended W.J.Scott Elementary School on Browntown Rd. from K-2nd grade. My 3rd- 7th grade years were spent at Anderson Park Elementary School on Tiger Flowers Drive. My favorite teacher was my 5th grade teacher, Mrs.Whatley. She made a big impact on my life. I will never forget her. Other teachers that I really loved were Mrs.Myrtice Taylor, Mr.Wilson, Mrs.Rainwater, Mrs. Grier and Mr.Carey-the PE teacher whom I had a serious crush on. Some of my friends were Rosemary Coachman, Janice Lyons, Angela Houston, Deborah Wilson, Myrna Taylor, Varetta Williams, Beverly Summerlin, Patricia Turner, Vickie Banks, Delaney Stone, Deborah Jones, Raymond Stovall, Tora (Mechie) Woods, Owen Hicks, Deborah Jones, and I can't remember any more names. I still remember my elementary school song, "To Anderson With Love" - it was to the tune of "To Sir With Love" - the movie that Sidney Poitier played in. I entered high school in 1969 at Henry McNeal Turner High- 8th grade only. Algebra kicked my behind. My fondest memory was the 8th grade picnic. My two closest friends were Angela Houston and Deborah Wilson. I would love to see them again. I attended Fredrick Douglass High School in 9th-12th grades. I became an introvert, very bashful and not many friends. My favorite teacher was Mrs. Hardy. She was a sweetheart. My fondest memories were the 12th grade picnic, leaving early for my work study job, and GRADUATION. I HATED HIGH SCHOOL!!!!!! 1974 Graduate College The thought of going to college back then or even now truly disgusts me. I've always hated school, including elementary and high school. The only reason I went to college was because I desperately wanted to be a teacher, every since 3rd grade. I have a passion for teaching, but I did not like going to school. I think I hated school so because of the homework and my bashfulness. I was extremely bashful, to the point of being an introvert. My fondest memory of college(Atlanta Junior College; Georgia State University; and Central Michigan University) was ordering my cap and gown and GRADUATION DAY. So be it. Workplace My 30 years as a 5th grade elementary teacher have been somewha...Expand for more
t challenging, but extremely rewarding!!! I taught at the same school for 30 years. I began straight out of college and never left. I LOVED IT!!!! I was nominated as Teacher of the Year 5 times, and won that title twice. I am a Who's Who Among America's Teachers Multiple Year Honoree - an honor bestowed upon me by high school seniors who were once my 5th grade babies. I've been nominated by my students' parents to receive the Teacher Disney Award for creativity in the classroom. I feel so blessed to know that I have made such an impact on my students and their parents. I simply taught from the heart and I prayed to God every morning that He would grant me patience and understanding and that He would teach through me. More than anything else, I've found that when children know, truly know and can feel that you genuinely love them and care about them, you don't have as many major discipline problems, and most of them perform better academically. I must say though, that as much as I loved teaching and nurturing my babies, I am eagerly awaiting retirement. Why? Not because of the children, but because of all of the paper work and all of the other garbage that the politicians and high ranking school officials have thrown our way. They are not in the real world and I don't think they realize how stressful they made our lives. And Lord have mercy, there's entirely too much focus on TEST SCORES!!! Politicians just don't realize how many factors play into how well children perform on standardized tests. They need to follow some of these children home; then they would understand. Volunteer work at my school will be close to the top of my list as things to do during my retirement. Also, I am hoping to have my Especially Yours Events planning company up and running with the help of the Lord!!!!!! Well, I AM NOW RETIRED!!! HALLELUJAH!!!!!! MAY 2014 I have not volunteered at my school, yet; nor have I applied to be a substitute teacher. I NEED A BREAK! RETIREMENT IS THE NEXT BEST THING TO SALVATION THANK YOU JESUS
