Deborah's Story
Life
Ya'at'eeh (Hello) Shikis (My Friends),
Ok, where should I start. I attended Roosevelt High from 1970 through 1973. I was not a out-going popular kind of person, not that I was anti-social, just kind of kept to myself with a few real nice friends. I went to Wawona Jr. High, Winchell and Emerson Elementary (respectively). Yes, I was born and raised in Fresno.
My older brother also went to Roosevelt High (Ralph Cayedito) he graduated in 1971. He was more involved wrestling, football and chess.
After high school, I attended Fresno City College and the Universidad de Campesino Libres (an alternative college for farmworkers which then, was near the Roeding Park.
I am a Navajo (Dine), and my people are orginally from the four corners area (Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico)...Expand for more
. When I lived in Fresno, being Native American was not popular so-to-speak. After high school in Fresno, I pretty much got involved with community action projects, so-to-speak, especially those which helped people who were poor (like my family was).
However, in 1976, I decided to move back to the Navajo Nation to do for my people as I was doing in Fresno. This is the best choice I ever made in my life. At first, I was lonely for Fresno, but now, I am so happy to be within the Dine Four Sacred Mountains.
It's so funny, when in HS I was shy, now my friends tease me and say to me, dang be quiet (LOL)., then I get quiet and they say, Deb - would you say something...Isn't that too funny.
So, I think I'll take a chill pill for now, until one of you ask me something. Hagonee (later)...
