Deborah's Story
Since high school graduation, my life has been anything but boring. After graduating from Powelson Business Institute (my first degree), I married Rick Oberhofer, whom I met at Lost Horizon on Erie Blvd in Syracuse. We have two adopted children: Steven from El Salvador and Sara from Colombia. Traveling to their birth countries to bring them home, even at the height of a civil war in El Salvador and unrest in Colombia, were the greatest experiences of my life.
I have traveled quite a bit and lived in eight houses and five states, finally relocating to a community half-way between Raleigh and Durham, NC in March 2022.
Professionally I have worked in all levels of law enforcement. The positions I'm most proud of are that of violent crime criminal analyst with the FBI, from which I retired in June 2021; and Reserve Deputy Sheriff in Stark County, OH, working as the only female on an undercover narcotics task force. My greatest professional accomplishment was solving a 13 year old cold case homicide/bank robbery for which the suspect was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, and for which I received a personal phone call and award from the Director of the FBI. The FBI also provided me opportunities to travel and assist others in crisis situations. I currently work with the Raleigh Police D...Expand for more
epartment's Human Exploitation & Trafficking Unit, conducting research and analysis on child sexual abuse material (child pornography) and human trafficking investigations.
For several years I served on the SUNY Empire State College Federation Board of Governors in Saratoga Springs, NY, representing the Genesee Valley Center in Rochester. Empire State College is near and dear to my heart, having made it possible for me to return to school to get a second degree while working full-time for the FBI with a family and a busy social life. The enhancement to my career made all those hours of studying along side my son, who was also in college at that time, totally worth it. How many parents can say they shared the experience of college statistics with their child!!
Since moving to Durham, North Carolina, I volunteer for the Durham Inter-Faith Food Shuttle packing boxes of food to be distributed to needy families in the Durham, NC area. I also volunteer with the non-profit organization Sleep in Heavenly Peace. With the help of community volunteers and corporate sponsors, we build and deliver beds, complete with bedding, free of charge to needy children who are sleeping on the floor or do not have a bed of their own.
Retirement??? It is what you make it, and I'm making it busy, rewarding, and fun!
