Deborah Dabbs's Story

In February of 1977 I couldn¿t believe I had quit my job at Lanier Memorial and was driving with all my worldly possessions to Atlanta to get married! It was a scary and happy day. Mal, now my husband of 32 years, has made my life so interesting and surely broadened my horizons from Lanett! We have been blessed with wonderful and varied life so far. Mal is a wonderful man and has been a pure gift to me. We traveled and basically did as we wanted for 14 years until our son, Brad, was born. Then we traveled some more. Prior to and during that time I worked as a supervisor in our local hospital and then manager in an Atlanta Hospital (Georgia Baptist) until our son began school. I then began work at home as a medical transcriptionist so I could have more flex-time as a Mom...I have loved every minute of it. Brad played soccer and football and we were very active in parent support for his programs. We miss it already. Brad is now 18 years old and will be leaving for Navy Special Forces in October 2009. He has been a joy to us. I am proud of him, but worry for him also. Mal and I are very active in the music program at our local church and I stay busy with wo...Expand for more
rk, our son, gardening (vegetable), friends and family and a small place on lake Widowee. As I write this, it sounds so very boring and average, but it has been so much more than I could have ever imagined when growing up in that small milltown. Lanett now will never be as we remember it. I do sometimes miss home the way it was¿how we knew everybody and what was going on with them (we knew too much sometimes!). When I visit my parents I very occasionally see people I went to school with and wonder about others and how life has treated them. I look back and cannot believe some the antics we pulled. I am surprised we survived some of them! Smoking in the bathroom. Laying out of school to go to Calloway Gardens for the day and hiding in the car trunk in 90-degree weather because we didn't have enough money to pay our way in. Then so stupidly going to school the next day sunburned! What idiots...and what fun! I am surprised that our class hasn't had more reunions. We have lost a couple of classmates(probably more than I'm aware of) in the past few years.. I guess everyone is too busy to organize these things¿Maybe when we get "old" we'll have more time?!
