Deborah's Story
Life
Just wanted to write a short update. I'm married for a 2nd time, to my dream guy, John Powers. My daughter Alissa is getting married in May, '05 and will be having her first child in September. Its still amazing to me to think that my first baby is having a baby. She's a great girl and will be a terrific wife and mother. I'm also the gramma to Fiona, 2. Her dad is my oldest step-son Ted and they live with Anne in Alameda, CA. That is where Alissa and her boy, Mike currently live, too. My oldest step-daughter, Amy, is a student at UCSD and is loving it. My 17 year old son, Spencer is a junior this year. Of course, we're on the "getting ready for college" track which is sort of like a full time job. He's looking at a major/minor or double major in Marine Biology and Music/Theater Arts. How's that for a combo? It wasn't like this when we were getting ready for college!! Cameron is 15, my youngest and a sophomore this year,he's full of life and wants to be a filmmaker.
I'm pretty involved with the boys school, I sit on the board and do a lot of volunteering in various areas. I realized early on that my time with my kids was limited to about 17 years of real hands-on involvement, and that time passes quickly. I decided that, as long as they didn't mind my being around, I'd be involved in their lives as much as was healthy. They keep me on my toes, but are such wonderful people, I don't mind.
I'm also involved, again, initially through my kids interests, with a small non-profit performing arts school. I've been on the Board in a very involved capacity for about 14 years. All of the kids have had some experience with the school,Amy played clarinet for many years, Alissa has danced since she was 2 and will probably continue in some capacity after the baby is born, Spence acts, plays guitar and piano, and Cam acts and plays guitar and bass. You can see how easy it was for me to become so involved in this school.
I'm preparing to go back to college and ...Expand for more
finish my undergrad studies. Its a little daunting at our age, but better late than never. I've always felt a little incomplete by not having finished school and I thinks its time to put that right. I'm still not sure what I want to be when I grow up, there are just so many interesting and intriguing possibilities out there...so much to do, so little time. I'm nervous but excited, so wish me luck.
I have a great time with John. Its just so nice when your partner is also one of your best friends. We share a lot of the same interests but are different enough to keep it interesting. John is an arts consultant and a writer. He's always working on something interesting and his career allows us to keep our fingers on the pulse of the culteral arts scene in the L.A. area. We're also pretty big museum and gallerey junkies, a trait our children don't always appreciate. But, we manage to have fun most of the time.
We've been very fortunate in being able to travel a bit. We've been in and outside of the U.S. and our kids seem to view themselves as "citizens of the world". Its a different experience having adventures with your children, it tends to give you a different perspective on the world and on your comfort zone and theirs. I love that they're pretty comfortable being out there and experiencing the global community.
I spend a great deal of time with friends and am fortunate to have a wide and varied circle of really close relationships. I have friendships that date back to grade school and most are between 10 and 20 years in length. There are so many wonderful and interesting people out there and I'm so lucky to keep bringing them into my life.
I'm a big reader, fiction, non-fiction, I pretty much like it all. I've also been exploring photography for the last few years. It just opens my eyes to so many things I've taken for granted and it helps me to see things in a new way. Seeing it fresh.
I'd love to hear from old friends. Be joyful in life. Debbie
