Deborah's Story

Hello Classmates, The Holy Season is upon us, and for those of you with kids still in college, you know it brings the kids trickling in from school, and tuition bills for January. This year we only have one adult child left in school and she won't be home for Christmas. Jade, 26, will be spending Christmas in Curacao, a Dutch island off the coast of Venezuela, where she will be taking four hours of international law, and enjoying the sun and some SCUBA diving courtesy of her student loan. She has three semesters left in Baltimore to get her law degree and MA in Conflict Mgt and Negotiation. Hope she can get a job! Regan leaves for NYC to visit boyfriend and fellow actor, Brian, and scope out the affordable apts in the Queens, Brooklyn and Manhatten areas of NYC. She plans to move there in March 2009 and begin her search for employment as an actress and singer. Of course, she hopes to be on Broadway, but she may be waitressing at the Broadway diner for a while.LOL. She has spent the months since her graduation waitressing and appearing on Army Wives and is now in rehearsal for "Autobahn", a Neil Labute play beginning Dec 18th with the Footlight Players on Queen St, Charleston. After that she will do "Alice in Wonderland" with Jimmy Ward again to wrap up her experience in Charleston. I began a new job in the fall as a research assistant for an anthropologist from Eastern Carolina U. who is writing a book about my life - the decline of the fishing industry in Mt. Pleasant. I am doing the legwork and archival work for him here. Dr. David Griffith already has six books under his belt and I know this one will be interesting and will hopeefully have some political impact on the continued state and federal regulations that have forced many commercial fishermen out of business...Expand for more
. The lastest from the South Atlantic Fisheries Mgt Council is a cut in snapper-grouper quotas by 95%. This will, in effect, decimate that fishery and put several more boats on Shem Creek out of business. Frank continues as Director of the SC Seafood Alliance and has been pushing hard to get the locals to buy FRESH LOCAL SEAFOOD. Last weekend he hosted "A Taste of Shem Creek" which was a great success. Now if we could only get the restaurants to serve our local seafood. There is something wrong with the system when you can fly in swordfish from Australia and pay airfreight and still undercut our prices. They must have aborigines on those fishing boats! Viet Nam and Thailand continue to spoil the sales of local shrimpers with their pond-raised shrimp that are pumped full of antibiotics. Be sure you know what you are eating and when you eat shrimp, make sure it is not all the same size. Those are pond-raised! I am also working evenings at the Franke Nursing Home down the street from me, handing out meds on the Alzheimers Unit and also working in Assisted Living. I love the old people and they return that love tenfold. These folks who can not remember their names or where they are, never fail to voice their appreciation for even the smallest gestures of kindness. Go see someone in a nursing home this Christmas, or share your talent with them! Those of you who have not called or emailed me about our upcoming Reunion, please contact me at Classmates and give me you email address. Wishing all of you a warm, family Christmas, and a prosperous and Happy 2009! Remember, Jesus was born and died, so that we might live - forever. Warmest Wishes to all, Debi Hart Blum
