Deborah's Story

Living in the Catskill Mountains where my greatest memory is my daughter running through the field of wildflowers behind the house, only her curly yellow head showing as she runs. I love my life! I really enjoy the flowers in my garden and sitting outside on hot summer nights. I miss my son terribly! He is 41, married, and lives in Chapel Hill, NC. My DIL is a smart and tough cookie that completes the man he is. I love her! No grandkids, just a Great Dane grandpup named Kaiju and lots of cats down there! After pretty much raising him alone, I remarried and had my daughter when he was a senior in high school. The down side of that is that was old enough to be the mother of the Girl Scout leader! I have no patience with young mothers (forgive me!) School Oh! How I hated High School! I was worse than a round peg in a square hole - I was 1/2 geek, 1/2 freak. But if I could do it all over again, I think I could certainly do it better! College Ended a relationship, quit my job and moved my son & me to Delhi in August of 1989. Worked 3 Part-time jobs, started my own business - bookkeeping & Income Tax. Earned AAS - Accounting; earned High Honors 3.91 Cum at graduation. Phi Theta Kappa. Attended SUC at Oneonta and earned BS-Economics in December of 93. I loved this challenge too, but by then I knew I'd never be happy as a CPA and changed direction. I proved I could do it, got my piece of paper. No regrets. Ha! to Mr. Lang, who wrote me off. THANK YOU!! to Mr. Gallagher, who tried to tell me that there WAS something out there just for me; who told me that I could do ANYTHING! Workplace Worked in electronics for many years as a prototype wirer , and I really enjoyed that. But in the 80's I realized that I had peaked, and so I decided to go to college. I started bookkeeping and taking classes. By 89' wanted to 'hurry up!', so I quit working and went to school full time. My original goal was to obtain my CPA, but in the end I decided not ...Expand for more
to sit for the exams. I realized that I wanted to do something that mattered. I work 30 hrs/week as a church secretary, which I really love! I am able to be a part of something that serves a greater good, and I like that. Sometimes I get the opportunity to be of real help to people on a very personal level. I especially enjoy that! I also work my own business part time doing bookkeeping, income taxes, billing, etc, for small businesses and individuals. Along with that, I also do some computer set-up and maintenance. As you can see, I like variety! All I ever wanted from life was peace. I pretty much have peace, so I am content. As a single-mom (again!) I learned more about things than I ever wanted to know - like where that spring on the riding mower needs to be hooked to, to keep the blades moving; how to drain the oil and clean the filter on the push mower; that an electric weed whacker is easier on my back than a gas powered machine; that I don't know how to shingle a roof (bah!). So all that's gone now and I live with my daughter & her fiance. I'm not as feeble as they seem to think I am (yet), but I do love no longer mowing the lawn or running the snowblower at 6 am winter mornings! How do old friends remember me? Oh, I just hope they forgave me the insanity! I was so wrapped up in my own (self-created) drama that I'm sure they remember me as little more than a pain in the neck! I'm not even sure that people I thought of as friends felt the same about me. Today, I have the best friends in the world! They're probably better friends to me than I am to them, but I'm working on that. When times get tough, they're right here for me. I want to be the same for them. I'm old enough to completely understand how youth is wasted on the young. And old enough to not update that picture up there, lol! I put that there about 12 years ago and I think I'm on the accelerated aging plan now, but I'm not changing it. Updated: 9/25/20
