Deborah's Story

I graduated early from high school and spent that last semester at Mesa CC before going on to ASU. My grade point average was not what it should have been after skipping one time in my school years with subsequent lowering of every one of my grades. It was very unfair! Did anyone else have this happen? At ASU, I majored in Interior Design from 1973 to 1975. Married in 1975 and moved to Shreveport for a year. The South is a different world!!! Moved to the Seattle area where I changed to Art History and graduated from the University of Washington with honors in 1979. In 1981 went to graduate school at the University of Chicago. Graduated in 1983 with my MA. And went on to do Ph.D. Coursework. Chicago was a fun place except the weather, which was pretty cold for a girl who grew up in Mesa. My interest in music continued. I played flute and piano growing up. Some of you may know the Carson Jr High band teacher went to prison for sexual assault. Thank goodness, my sister and I were not among those who were victims. Of course, I loved rock and roll. I still believe we had best ever music, including the brilliant Jimi Hendrix. Jazz and blues followed, then classical and opera. Finally I became a fan of country and western, and still listen to all of these styles. Through living in Chicago and New York, I have seen some of the greats: BB King, Cream, Jefferson Airplane, Segovia, Pavaroti, Domingo, Dave Brubeck, Milt Jackson, Garth Brooks, Isaac Perlman, and others. Fortunately, theater too entered my life, and I was grateful to see Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton together, Derek Jacobi, Patrick Stewart, Patti Lupine etc. In 1987, we moved to New York and I became interested in period architecture, as we lived in an Edwardian 1904 home. From New York, the entire east coast is accessible: Boston, Salem, Philadelphia, Washington DC. The latter was next move for a year. There I learned to country dance:) My Wyoming grandmother needed help with age relat...Expand for more
ed illnesses, so I went in 1993 and stayed in Wyoming, divorced, and began my Museum career directing and curating. In 2000, I moved to Prescott to run the Pippin Museum and be closer to my parents in Phoenix. After 4 years, I moved to St. George to run the St. George Art Museum until I retired in 2019. Covid and my mom's partner dying was not how I envisioned retirement. Mom met Bill who lost his wife, the same year my dad died in 2005. Bill died in 2020. In 2021, I moved to Wyoming to be closer to my sister and her family and cousins. Mom is here with us too. My 1939 house keeps me very busy, along with my many houseplants, bushels of flowers, two cats, pond with goldfish I brought from my pond in St. George. That was quite the process. My position in museology enabled me to travel for conferences, and somewhere along the line, I collected all 50 states. From a few trips abroad, I have been able to visit many countries. My brother lives in Niceville, Florida with his wife and their children also live in Florida. An aunt and uncle still live in Scottsdale. My sister's 4 kids live in Laramie, here, Pearl River, Louisiana,a d soon a graduate from Veterinary school. We are a fairly close family, have trips together and gatherings...last in Yellowstone for my siblings both 40th wedding anniversary in 2021. Since realizing 50 years graduating from Westwood were upon me, I connected with You all. When the 10th anniversary occured, I was on my first trip to Europe, a month in Greece. Then I never got my info and somewhere lost my yearbooks. It is a shock! 50 Years!!! Unfortunately I have struggled to remember you all. Due to things, I did not do Facebook or other social media, and it has been a very long time. In all of those years, I have met all kinds of people everywhere. So forgive me for my lack of memory or not keeping in touch with anyone. Time just passed, and I lived in all regions of the country. So please say hello.... Deborah
