Deborah's Story
Life
After high school, I went to Chatham
College in Pittsburgh & graduated in
1968. Don't laugh when I mention I
majored in Medieval French
Literature--you know--the Arthurian
legends, etc. etc. I always had a
"thing" for fairy tales...Unfortunately, it
did NOT prepare me for ANY career
so I went to graduate school at
Columbia & majored in Middle
Eastern Studies. I really wanted to be
an archeologist BUT got married to a
medical student at SUNYatBuffalo &
there were no opportunities to do any
kind of archeology in Buffalo. We had
all we could do to dig out of the snow
in the winter....I got a sales job
working at Honeywell Industries so
we could eat, pay the rent, pay tuition,
etc. When he interned at Johns
Hopkins, I went back to school for a
3rd time & finally got "it" right. I got a
masters in Language Development
which was part linguistics & part
Psychology of Learning. I've been
working ever since with learning
disabled/developmentally delayed
preschool children in Baltimore, back
in Buff...Expand for more
alo, then Pittsburgh, NYC, &
finally in St. Petersburg, FL. My
husband taught in medical schools
& did research until 1985 when he
went into practice here in FL. Both of
our children went to college "Up
North" where they indulged in every
snow sport imaginable. Now our
(married) daughter lives in Albany,
NY & our son lives in NYC. Neither of
them has any desire to live down
here, but at least, they have a pretty
(& free) place to vacation....
College
I majored in the LEAST practical major----medieval French literature and history. BUT it did give me an incredible knowledge of medieval history, thinking, art, etc. It also gave me time to grow up! College was fun and mind-expanding. After graduating, I went to Columbia University for a master's degree in Ancient Middle Eastern Studies on my way to being an archeologist. Guess I hadn't grown up yet! After marrying, I went back a 3rd time--this time for a master's degree in the Psychology of Learning & this time it stuck! I'm working with preschoolers who have language-learning problems & I love it!!
