Deborah's Story
Life
Shortly before graduation, and over the Summer of '82, I became involved with WSIA at College of Staten Island. So while I was figuring out what I did want to do with my life, after realizing that I didn't want to be a Special Ed teacher, I attended CSI. I studied Liberal Arts: Math, Sciences, Spanish, English Literature, Psychology, Sociology, and worked at the radio station as a DJ/programmer, and with NYPIRG (environmental justice issues). Over the summers, I was a camp lifeguard and counselor upstate NY. I also worked through the school year(s) as a Recreational Therapy tech with United Cerebral Palsy, a DJ at a club on Staten Island, and doing the nursery at a bowling alley for 3 leagues a week. Finally, I needed to know what I was meant to do, so I met with a counselor, took an Occupational Interest Survey, and discovered that I was supposed to be an Occupational Therapist. I finished my pre-requisites in the third year at CSI, and transferred to Downstate to begin Gross Anatomy and Intro to OT 5 days later. I graduated with my BS in Occupational Therapy at the end of 1987, and have loved it ever since.
I live in SLC with my partner, Carla, our 2 dogs and cat, and near most of her family here in Utah. Carla is a professional artist, and graduated from BYU in 1980, right here in Utah. We had a Unitarian-Universalist wedding ceremony in July of 1992, two and a half years after I moved here and we met. Most of our family were able to attend, including her Mormon family and my Jewish family. We tried having children, b...Expand for more
ut no such luck. I served as the Youth Group adult advisor for our congregation for 7 years and have kept up with many of the youth, some who are in College now, others graduated, or just finishing high school. My memory of my friends' and my own youthful antics is sharp, so there isn't much that they could get by me, or so I like to think. If you knew me then, you know what I mean.
These days, I work full time at a Skilled Nursing Rehab facility with an adult through geriatric population. Also, I work for a Rehab company, providing community-based Occupational Therapy for people who have Acquired Brain Injury (trauma, strokes, tumors), Burns, Spinal Cord Injury, and/or other traumatic conditions. I've also worked many years in Home Health and Inpatient Rehabilitation settings. I LOVE what I do!
Recreationally, I enjoy hiking and skiing in the local mountains, swimming, watching independent (as well as other) films, going out for sushi, going to "GAY BINGO" and attending monthly local Gallery Strolls. I write songs and raps, usually about UU spirituality and/or social justice. I also love playing games like Scrabble, Killer Bunnies, Quirkle, Settlers of Catan, card games, board games, puzzle type games, and I like craps and blackjack- in Nevada- when I can afford it.
I enjoy driving out to the Great Salt Lake Marina to take photographs of the sunset at different times during the year. The price of gas is a real killer to my love of driving the open roads of the West just to explore what is here, or to get away from the city.
