Deborah's Story

OK if someone told me I'd be crunching numbers all day long when I was in High School, I probably wouldn't be here right now as I don't think I could have survived that thought. So for a living, I own my own business as a commercial real estate appraiser and broker and am the only woman in SC to have earned the MAI and the SRA designations of the Appraisal Institute. Yep, I'm proud of that. My pride and joy are my two kids - Robin (son of John Biro, class of 1970) who works with me, and Jessica, blonde hair, blue eyed just graduated from Winthrop University. I guess I'd have been considered a shy hippie type in High School. Went to Kent State University the fall semester after May 4th, where the environment was radical and unsettling, but also exciting for a rabble-rouser wannabe. My dream career of teaching got sidetracked in 1973 when my dad (Otto Schmidt - passed in 1980) gave me 'the talk' after being the first teacher in the Cleveland Public Schools to find a gun on one of his students. (Low pay, changing job, lots of paperwork, dedication and changing lives is your reward.) Hmmmm, maybe not such a great idea. So John Biro and I flew the coop. Moved to Arizona and lived in the desert, which we left when it got to be 115 degrees downtown and the buildings were waving. Went to a hippie ("Rainbow) festival at the Wind River Wilderness in Wyoming, where some peacenik stole everything we had in our red, double-cab 1952 pickup truck. Peace and love - not! So we hooked up with a couple of folks who needed a ride and had gas money but no vehicle, whereas we had a vehicle but no money. Ended up in Colorado when the gas money ran out. So, John and I got married and lived a 'back to the land' lifestyle on a fruit farm in a house made of hay (yes, folks, I said hay) and half-round wood, for almost 6 years, where my dear son Robin was born sans hospital, doctor, or midwife, in 1975. What an incredible experience and truly magical! But then, middle class called me h...Expand for more
ome. I needed my dishwasher, lights, sound, a TV, electricity, etc. not to mention fidelity. Daily comforts that we take for granted are surely cherished when one goes without for an extended time. And trust? Paramount for any relationship. Moved to SC in 1977 when Robin was 2, leaving John in Colorado, where he still lives in the mountains and is still pretty self-sufficient. I won't mention how many wives he's had after me - he's pretty much a legend in Crested Butte and his story has actually been published in a local book. So in SC, I worked as a paralegal of sorts and sang in a band in my 20's and when I grew up I sang solos and in the choir at church. Now I sing in my car. With the windows open. Fun! Hearing a fabulous song still gives me goosebumps. I still love the land and growing things. I love to have co-founded the SC Professional Appraisers Coalition here in SC, which helps to maintain the public trust by combating mortgage fraud and supporting appraiser independence and integrity. I love people. I love my family, who are all back home (sister Heidi Schmidt lives in Medina County, Chris Schmidt in Rocky River, and Gretchen Schmidt in Pittsburgh, PA, Mom, bless her heart, is 86 and swims 3x/week and lives in Olmstead Falls). I have learned that the ties that bind are truly the most beloved of all. 8 neices and nephews. So that's pretty much my story up to now. Interesting, huh! I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm a happy person and am content to be me, here, now. I love being mid-50's and not caring who or if I impress - thank God high school is over! So to all those guys out there who I was afraid to talk to, you who never knew the crushes I had on you - I may not have been very popular, but I was hot. Now? I'm just quite warm, sometimes cool, oh wait, that must be the hot flashes! So I have a wealth of life experience and am so glad for that. Take care my friends. Let's really live life! I can't wait to hear your story! Deborah
