Deborah's Story

After graduation I went off to UC Berkeley. On the first day there, I met my first husband, Larry. I was looking for the flower children and he was looking for a chick to pick up, as we both used to say and laugh. But truly he was the only person who felt like home, and after 2 quarters of strange people and also being tear gassed, CS gassed, pepper gassed, maced, and chased by some very large men in blue uniforms with really long nightsticks, I dropped out, managing to thankfully miss People"s Park. While trying to figure out where to enroll next, I did a semester at University of Miami. When I couldn't figure out where else to go, I returned to Berkeley but this time with Eileen Rubin (Julie Manolides), Carla Risolia (class of '65), and Ann Biderman (class of '69). So with my Beach High friends, Berkeley was much more fun. The next summer (1970) I married Larry, but we started off with one major problem. By then he lived in Toronto and I didn't. I stayed in Berkeley until the next summer when we decided where to live, probably one of the most beautiful places in the world, Laguna Beach. I enrolled at UC Irvine and finally got my Bachelor's degree. Larry and I divorced in 1975 but we remain close friends to this day. In fact, some may recall from the 30th reunion that I brought my "two husbands," Larry and Richard. This was Richard's idea. He thought it was hysterical. Part of why I love him! In the late 70's, I stumbled into my career, a way to combine my 2 greatest interests (other than space travel that is), math and science. It was time to continue my education, and I reall...Expand for more
y missed the East coast. So despite the beauty of Laguna and some wonderful friends, I moved to Manhattan and pursued and received my Masters and Doctorate in Biostatistics from Columbia University. One day 19 years after graduation, Richard Margulies (class of '68) called me up. By the time of the 20th reunion, I was pregnant with our oldest son, Joshua. Three years later our youngest, Zachary, was born. Manhattan was fantastic, but it is very hard with kids. After Josh was born, we moved to New Jersey. I've lived in some amazing places, beautiful and completely unique Miami Beach, strange but interesting Berkeley, stunning Laguna Beach, exciting, wonderful New York City. Who would guess that of them all, I would love New Jersey the best, but I do. I've been a working mom ever since, but I could never have done that without Richard, who is the best husband and father I can imagine. I think though he grew into the role. As my favorite anniversary card to him reads "I'm glad we met later in life. I don't think my mom would have let me play with you." We started the parenting thing late compared to most of you so right now (2008), Josh is a freshman in college and Zach is a sophomore in high school. While we live far from home, we return to the Miami area at least annually. Our children love it and want to settle there. Both of our families are there. My sister Judi (class of '65) who married Billy Gale (class of '62), is there as are their 2 children and 4 grandchildren. Richard's brother Bobby (class of '70) and his brand-new wife are there. Who knows, some day we may return.
