Deborah's Story

Though I am approaching the age of dirt, I am currently working toward my Masters in Social Science to go with my previous work in Psychology. If all goes as planned, I will earn a PhD and continue in education at the state administrative level rather than the campus level. I would love to see two teachers from SCHS: Wm Henderson and Helen Schnare. My first crush in high school was Tom Huessman. I have no idea what happened to him. My first "love" was Tom Petty. We dated our senior year. What happened to him? My kids swear he is the same Tom Petty who got so famous? My college crush was Tom Miralgia. I married Tom Mish. It was destiny that I marry a Tom!! I don't have that many old friends, however, I hope that Debby Montgomery, Sue Jurdan, Terry Crouch, Keith Hoff, Mary Ludwig, Carolyn Davis Keane and all my friends from the choirs we enjoyed remember me as worthy of their friendship. I must be truly happy because I am where I want to be, doing exactly what I want to do with the ones I want to do it with...my family of 5 children and 19+ grandchildren. My biggest surprise in life is that postponing my education in order to have and raise five children first turned out to be the wisest decision I could have made. I did so begrudgingly at first, but it was the absolute right thing to do. The only way I would "do-over" any part of my life is if I could do it with the knowledge I now possess. If that were possible I would re-do my high school years; putting more of myself into those years instead of being so darn shy. I would be as gutsy as I am today! The strangest job I have ever had was one I got shortly after I moved to California from St. Charles in June 1967. I went to work for the Mattel Toy Co. styling doll hair....Hey, it paid for books and tuition! Continuing the theme and pattern of a lifetime up to that point, I moved A LOT after high school. I moved to Los Angeles one week after graduation so I could attend Ambassador Uni...Expand for more
versity in Pasadena, but attended Mt. San Antonio College instead. 3 1/2 years later I moved to Fresno, California because of my husband's promotion. We moved three times within that city before we returned to L.A. some seven years and four children later. There was a lot more moving in our life together, Tom and I, but I think you get the point that moving has always been the bane of my existence! I currently live in Muskogee, Oklahoma. I married, raised a family, enjoyed a great career, made lifelong friends in California then retired and returned to my roots. I was born about 45 minutes from here in Tulsa. However, some of my greatest and fondest memories are from my high school years in St. Charles. I wasn't a stellar student back then because I was too shy to be noticed, but I was invited to join Alpha Gamma Sigma Honors Society my freshman year of college for achieving a 4.0 GPA. I include this info just in case some of my old teachers who believed in me and told me that I could do whatever I wanted to do happen to read this. I want them to know that I heard them. They planted the seeds that grew in me to make me successful. All of you from Mrs. Hodges freshman year to Mr. Brown of Evening Shade, Arkansas senior year and most particularly Mrs Helen Schnare and Mr Henderson made a believer of me in me. THANK YOU ALL. Here is something about me that will stun my friends from back then. As we all know, St. Charles is very much a Catholic town. Well, in February 1973 my new husband and I were baptized into The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We are called LDS for short and the nickname that most people know us by is "Mormon". Though divorce among our people is rare, I am divorced, but am still very active in the church. I want to be informed of the next reunion. I now live close enough to attend. 4/39/2008 UPDATE I have had to withdraw from the university for now. I have other priorities to attend to at this time.
