Deborah's Story

While at Purdue, I met a "charming" Guatemalan who swept me off my feet, and so after graduation, we married and I moved to Guatemala in the summer of 1977. I am no longer married, but I still live here, and while I hate being so far away from family, after living here for 30 years, this is home... and I love my life here! I have two children, 26 and 24. They both graduated from Butler University and now live and work in the States. we keep in touch. When I first moved here, I sort of "fell into" teaching since working in a bilingual school was the one job I could do without knowing much Spanish. As it turned out, education was a perfect career fit for me. This is my 23rd year in the same school, where I work as English Dept. Head in the secondary level and teach American Lit to 12th graders. I love working with young people, and while I've worked for many years administrative level, the past few years, I've been working my way back to more time in the classroom because that's my favorite place to be!
