Deborah M.'s Story

Life I was born in Salem Hospital, & grew up on Endicott Ave. in Marblehead, where my parents still live. From 1st grade to 5th grade I walked to & from Glover School (almost a mile each way) every day & enjoyed that, even when I was by myself. I did well in class (except history, which I had no interest in) & for the most part enjoyed school. On weekends I did stuff with friends, visited &/or walked all the dogs in the neighborhood, rode my bike around, & played in my back yard. Summers were spent at the ocean or Beach Club pool in Swampscott, playing tennis, or at summer camp & family vacations up in Maine. From 6th-8th grade I took the bus to Marblehead Middle School & started going into Boston/Cambridge on weekends to spend hours in the COOP music store or walk around the stores of Harvard Square & Quincy Market. In the summer I took sailing lessons at Pleon Yacht Club or volunteered at Salem Hospital, still making sure to fit in The Beach Club when time allowed. For 9th-12th grades, instead of being at Marblehead High School, I went to prep school (like my brothers) & attended Miss Hall's School in Pittsfield, MA. While there I sang in a small chorus, played JV and Varsity Softball, took horseback riding, & participated in a few school plays. Spring Break of my Junior year was spent in England, which was a great experience (especially the canal boats). After graduating in 1985, I attended Colby College in Waterville, ME & graduated with a B.A. in Psychology/Liberal Arts. After college, I lived & worked in Brighton, MA for a year and then moved up to Burlington, VT to live with my boyfriend, Andy Johnson (a friend from Colby who graduated in 1987). While he earned his Ph.D. at UVM, I held various temp. jobs, got a medical transcription degree, then worked as a medical secretary for a while. During this time we adopted a stray kitty, who soon delivered four kittens, two of which we kept & two which got adopted out. Andy & I ...Expand for more
got married in 1993 just a block away from the original Ben & Jerry's, then in 1994 we moved to Dublin, OH for Andy's post-doc at OSU(Go Bucks!). I continued to do medical secretary work, then we moved to Massachusetts in 1998 after realizing that the Mid-West just didn't suit us. We missed the snow & fall foliage of New England, the natural surroundings, Boston, & I wanted to live closer to my parents. After a few years of renting in Littleton, MA, in 2001 we bought our first house in Harvard, MA, a suisse chalet in the country w/ woods & creatures all around us. I've been an admin. assistant at Boston Biomedical Consultants, Inc. for almost five years, while Andy has been a project manager at PerkinElmer Life Sciences. We try to keep in touch w/ college friends, but not often enough of course. We don't plan to have kids, but hope to adopt a dog or two some year soon. We've traveled to the Caribbean a couple of times, Alaska for our 10th anniversary in 2003, Italy in Sept. 2004, & we hope to go many more places like the Galapagos, Africa, and explore more of Europe & Alaska. We've recently had our kitchen/diningroom area remodeled & we're very happy with the results, but we're already thinking about the next project. I sing in my UU church choir & do a lot of reading, listening to music, & working on various hobbies around the house. I still love to swim, play tennis & ride my bike, but I don't do it often enough, as I also still enjoy sleeping in on the weekends. I have an older brother (Jim) & his wife & kids (2 boys & 1 girl) living in Wilmette, IL, & one brother (Ben) & his wife living in Dunstable, MA. Recently Andy & I decided to be a one-car family for a while, so we finally broke down & got cell phones this month, so maybe we'll do better in the "communicating w/ friends & family" department. Also, after decades of wearing glasses &/or contact lenses, I finally had LASIK surgery on both eyes this May & it's been so great, so worth it.
