Deborah's Story
Life
After a traumatic break-up, loss of a job and a pretty screwed up life I moved from Cicero in October, 1988 to Marietta, Ohio. To get my head together and soak up a little TLC from my mom and step-dad. There was "no way I was staying in this one-horse town"! Famous last words, that was almost 18 years ago!
Had gastric bypass surgery February, 1994 lost 178 pounds and still losing.
Married to Charles Shockey, March 1997 and became a grandma to 5! Now are ages 23 to 14, 2 girls and 3 boys. Charles has 2 adult and married daughters from his first marraige which ended in the death of his first wife in 1995.
We live in a Victorian home circa early 1900's (with our 2 cats, Sam (20) and Squeek (3)) which is in a pretty much steady stage of some kind of remodeling. Last year it was the guest bedroom at the moment it is the master bath.
I am the field representative for our state senator, Joy Padgett and have been at that post for a year and a half. I'm very active in the local Republican party.
In my "spare time" during the holidays, I help a local interior designer decorate her clients homes for the holidays. I've done that the past 6 years. This year I picked up a few of my own clients. Which means that from mid November through late January I am pretty much covered in glitter and leave a "tinkerbell" trail wherever I go. That makes it pretty easy for Shockey to keep track of where I am!
We are very happy and settled. Shockey is a great man who lets me express my artistic talents and throw hormonal fits (once in a while!)
I've held quite a few interesting positions here, from pumping diesel fuel (first job here...hey, you do whatcha gotta do!) Worked at a local con...Expand for more
crete manufacturer, a corrugated box plant, a senior center, which was like doing volunteer work and getting paid for it! Somewhere in between those "gigs" I was recommended for a community leadership program which I participated in, grew a bunch of business contacts and landed a job with the chamber of commerce as the operations director which was pretty much the president's right hand. I learned a lot from Jack Moberg who was instrumental in helping me develop professionally, he trusted me and encouraged me to "make it happen" whatever "IT" was, I made it happen. I'll always be grateful for that experience which led me to the very fulfilling life I lead today. I've been involved and been an integral part of a lot of the local fund (and FUN) raisers. My husband and I are very community volunteer-minded.
Shockey was an avid houseboater until he made the decision last summer to sell the boat, it was getting to be too much upkeep. We both miss the life on the river, but don't miss the work (well, I guess I still even miss the work, but his part of the "boat work" was more demanding than mine!) He has been a member of the Marietta Boat Club for many years and has done practicall all of their electrical work, did I mention he is an electrician....isn't that funny...Shockey the electrician?!
I guess our life is pretty boring to many, but it suits us just fine. We both do pretty much whatever we want, when we want (between naps, of course! tee hee) and are very happy with our life together.
I hope most of our class can say the same. Be happy, take responsibility for your actions, be kind to others (including yourself) and eventually, what you do for others will come back to you.
