Deborah's Story

My husband-Brian Harris & I live on a small 45acre farm just 22 miles from Kingman, Arz. where we also own also a small Office Store---Don's Office Products in OLD down town Kingman.....one son-Kelly (who I named after Kelly Calhoun in Mesa for his TRUE & SINCERE friendship with me over those years)....I use to hang out with Marilyn Heap, Jeannie Barney, Dennis Sirrine, Diane Urrea, Diane Fairencamp, David Evans, Eddie Johnson, Charlie LeSueur, & of coarse we all knew Danny White....Finally back in touch with Charlie LeSueur & his mother--Willma.....have not located anyone else in years.....We all just got busy with our lives....Mesa was my happiest years in growing up.....it has allot to do with why we moved to Kingman, Arz. where it is so very much like the old Mesa small town use to be.....Dad--Martin Swanty has 3 different large Dealorships--2 in Kingman & one in Bullhead....which makes it very easy for friends to find me with his advertizements every where.....I was Food & Bar business for 15yrs while raising my son out of wed-lock from 1972.....Brian & I met 1986 & married 1992 in St.Thomas.....I was also a Prison Guard & Sargent for 8yrs. (both men & women) with the dream of becoming the Warden...But, major difference with my idea of Sherriff Joe's way & Utah's version of taking care of Inmates....we didn't agree, so I finally gave up & left in 1994....If you will remember, I left in Jan. during my Junior year when I was in the middle of having so fun in FFA due to Dad moving us to Nogales, Arz. but I would always come & visit during school events to keep in touch....then in 1970, after graduating Nogales High, I moved back to Mesa.....but too many things had already changed & everyone was off doing their thing of finally being set free from High School....My husband & I love our little farm away from "ALL" the big city mess......2-Jesus Burro's, horses, pot-belly pigs, pigmie goats, neubian goats, barbado sheep, wierdo chickens, & now 15 peacocks with 5 new babies that roam freely up on the land to protect us from the Mohave Green rattle-snakes, & of coarse your regular snakes, scorpions, cenepedes, etc.... they are GREAT hunters & roam together in groups of 3-4 as search parties & then take their assigned posts at night to watch over the place, including the water tanks, light poles, our bedroom roof, etc ......the 4 guard dogs are extremely good at protecting us & chasing the coyotes.....we do have to be armed out here....Many stories due to my love for these animals & why EVERY single one of them are my PETS with names as well( which really upsets our tax man cause we don't sell or eat any of them & they are given graves on the land we made into a cemetary for them .....they love my country music & some times the oldies. We keep the radio on at ALL times.......I had even taught the one set of 4 black fur-boot chickens in doing the wave with me to certain songs.....My other animals dance with me & the music during the breaks of doing chores.....We even do cocktail hour in the summer months with the little farm babies on the straw stacks....& enjoy watching the sunset together with them.....Expand for more
..Extremely loving animals who DO like to get into trouble & tear up things on me---no different than kids I guess...I mainly do all my talking with emailing ALLOT of pictures....it saves on words & time....my farm babies love their picture taken as well...& time just keeps getting shorter everyday in trying to accomplish the work & needs of the farm & our little Mom & Pop Office Store....we have been on this farm for 6yrs., although we moved here 10yrs ago from SLC,Utah...Brian & I always wonder why it took so long to find our true happiness in life... Brian was strickly suit & tie & worked ALLOT of political jobs. & we traveled to MANY places in U.S....No one ever believed that one day, cocktail hr. with the boys would become the farm with the animals(lots of pic's on that too)....I would love to just email pic's to you as I have done with Charlie & his mother.....it's ONLY then that you finally understand where my life has taken Brian & I today.....I think the world just got a little too crazy with GREED & MONEY for Brian & Me......Yes, it's allot of hard work & keeps us broke most of the time due to constant repairs & feed & goodies for the babies on the farm----but the work brings out soooooo MUCH good & satisfaction for Brian & I at the end of the day while watching the sun sets, then watching the moon coming up, & the sky filling up with clusters of 1000's of stars with the Milky way... Yes, it's why we call our place "A Piece of Heaven" on mile marker 66 on I40 next to the Petro Truck Stop on your right, then filled with rolling hills, Cedar Trees, Palo Verdi trees, catus', etc.(we are 4 miles back in from the Highway).....so as you are driving by trying to get to Vegas for the BIG win and/or see Hoover Damn(which by the way, when the bypass is completed you will NO longer see Hoover damn UNLESS you pay to drive through it---so better hurry)...look to your right & you will know where we are.....or stop in on Andy DeVine to Dad's Dealorships & they will direct you to our store in OLD downtown Kingman.....we love being part of the days of old......Simple, Honest, hard-working people in this GREAT little town of ours----so much like Mesa USE to be.....Brian & I work the Rodeo every year & are in charge of the popcorn & soda booth--$1. each, so the blue collars can still afford it for all the little kids(Sept 27 & 28th)....We even have the OLD School Bus that is totally furnished & used as the "Family Fort" for the grandkids & our friends kids here on the farm....they all want one for their back yard when they come from the big city for a visit....too cute....so much fun to watch the innocense of these young kids BEFORE the others influence them of what's important...."Inch by inch & life's a snich.....Yard by yard & your life becomes hard".......easy to say, but hard in the beginning of learning how to enjoy & appreciate life & all our MANY blessings & gifts from God....Hope to hear from you......If not, I'm NOT offended & wish the best for each & every one of you....There are NO accidents in life.....there is a reason why one cross' your path & years later understanding why....Debbie Swanty
