Debra's Story

Life Debra Hudman Banker, graduated 1970 from Jordan Vocational High School, Columbus, GA, after leaving WHS (Wetumpka HS) my freshman year. Stayed in touch with many friends and even bought a WHS 1970 annual that friends signed for me. I married 1971, became mom to an 18-mo-old boy. Lived in GA, FL, Germany, and returned to AL in 1977 living in Montgomery, Millbrook, and Wetumpka. Divorced 1984, remarried 1987 to Lee Banker, Lee High School graduate. I've worked civil service for almost 30 years, at present editor at Air Force Institute for Airmen Distant Learning at Gunter. We own a Pepperidge Farm Cookie/Cracker franchise that my husband operates. Have a stepson from husband's first marriage. Have a 10-yr-old daughter we adopted when she was six; my son's first born. We live in Emerald Mountain, Wetumpka. Our lives changed drastically when we became parents of a young one again, but it's so rewarding. Our lives revolve around school, soccer, church, sleepovers, piano, and lots of prayer! I have three grandchildren: two boys and a girl. We have a travel trailer and camp as much as possible. My retirement date has been extended due to college tuition for our daughter. Once upon a time, I was an avid golfer, along with my husband who still is, until we took up child rearing again. We've had a Guinea pig, ferret, rabbit, cats, still have two cats named Savannah and Izzy (tripod due to one leg being removed/cancer), and now a Dumbo rat, Sir Rodent Reese the Rat, along with Harley David Boss Hawg, our Chihuahua. Both my parents are now deceased. My older brother Larry lives in Chattanooga, TN; my sister Diane lives in north AL, and my little brother Andy lives in Prattville. They all graduated from WHS. School Mrs. Singleton (Eng), Mrs. Latham (Eng), Coach Holley, and Ms. Boddie (PE), and Mrs. Johnson (Algebra) were my favorite teachers at WHS. I attended three different high schools, and WHS pep rallies were the best. It was hard to beat our band, awesome majorettes with the head dresses. Back then it was cool to ride the bus, no. 39, because we had so much fun. It was Tommy and Ricky Sanford who influenced my college sports choices. We had great parties at the Elmore Community house that we rented for $5/night--you read correctly. The dances at the National Guard Armory with the Knight Riders were total fun. When I moved to Columbus, GA, I attended Hardaway HS for one year in 1967-68, 10th grade. I was in Mrs. House's homeroom with Jane Ingram and Brenda Huckaby. Biology was great fun with Sammy McRae as was World History. We put our fish eggs on our lunchroom trays to watch them clean them off. I met Steve Cartwright and became friends w/his entire family. I transferred to Jordan Voc HS my junior and senior year from 1968-70. Mrs. Josey (shorthand) was one of my favorite teachers. I worked my senior year. I dated Larry Hughes (1969 grad of JVHS) and Mike McDuffie from Duluth. I was friends with Cissie Brewer, Butchie Aaron, Shelia Burkett, Chris Duff-Collins, Debbie Peed, and Janice ...Expand for more
Lewis. I'm not in contact with anyone from Georgia and haven't attended any reunions. I went to Olympia Heights Elem, Miami, FL, first and second grade (teachers Bosco and Cobb, respectively), and during the summer between second and third grades, we moved to Wetumpka, AL, where I attended Hohenberg Memorial until I went into seventh grade (3rd Hull, 4th DeBardelaben, 5th Arant, 6th Daniels [teachers]). I have great memories of grade school and Jr. High. Moving after my freshman year of HS was really tough, and adapting was difficult. Steve Eiland, Janet Foshee, Charlotte Thornton, Diane Wiggins, and all the Blue Ridge gang were great friends and corresponders who kept me going my first year in GA. My mom complained about our postage bill at pennies a letter! It was a huge adjustment, but once I established friends, it got easier. We just didn't have that history of knowing everyone and the Peyton Place small-town flare. Now that I've returned to Wetumpka and have a daughter in the school system, I encounter many people from my past. I have even discovered a cousin in church upon accident because we didn't recognize one another or our married names. Unfortunately, I recognize many names in the obituaries too. Having a brother and sister six and fives years older and a brother three years younger has placed me in a position to know folks older and younger. Workplace Before I graduated, I worked for Admiral Merchants Dixie/Jack Cole trucking company as part of the school work program. Upon graduation, I was hired by Williams Construction Company as a secretary/receptionist. While working there I took a second job with a sales company, working a couple hours each night. When I married, I was an instant mom and stayed home for a few months. I worked as a maid for a colonel's wife because I could take my son, and then another lady and I created our own work team and cleaned quarters for those moving from the Army base. When I was in Germany, I started working civil service for the Army. When I returned to the states, I started work for Dept of Interior, US Fish and Wildlife Service, Law Enforcement Div as a secretary/stenographer for almost 10 years. During the latter part of that job, I took a second job with the Dept of Agriculture, working three hours at night. I worked that second job for a total of six years. I transferred to Dept of Defense (Air Force) and worked for Civil Engineering for three years; transferred to Air University Press for 16 years as an technical editor; and am now with Air Force Inst. of Distance Learning working as an editor. Oddly enough, my high school teachers advised NOT to go to college because I was in the business vocational program and didn't need a degree to get a job. They were correct in that I certainly could work. But attending Columbus College and getting a degree would have certainly been a benefit. I attempted college as a single mom after my divorce while working two jobs and going to school. I did that for a while, but never received a degree.
