Debra's Story

Twenty eight yrs. ago, I moved up to Jupiter from Golden Beach. I have been married for 43 yrs. to Jack Sobel, an Attorney in Stuart, FL. We had 2 daughters who are now 33 and 40 yrs. old. Both daughters have graduated from college at this time. The oldest has her MBA (Masters in business) and the youngest graduated from Law School in December 2015, and is an attorney in West Palm Beach. My oldest daughter was married in March 2016. We have our first grandchild, a little boy who is now 6 yrs. old.. At the end of July 2018, my oldest daughter had our second grandchild, a little girl, 5 yrs. old. And now another little boy was born in July 2021.. He is 2 years old. Jack and I love being grandparents!. Our youngest daughter was married in Nov. 2020. She gave birth to her first child in Nov. 2021, a little girl, who is our 4th grandchild, almost 2 yrs. We all live near each other and we get to spend alot of happy times as a family. I run a volunteer, non-profit program called The Sea Turtle Conservation League of Singer Island. I am the President and the Permit Holder with 24 Volunteers on my permit. My group is permitted by FLA. Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to conduct sea turtle nesting surveys on 2.4 miles of Singer Island in Palm Beach County. I began turtling in Golden Beach in 1990, and when I moved ...Expand for more
up to Jupiter, FFWCC asked me to take over Singer Island. We have 3 species of sea turtles nesting on our beach: Loggerhead, Green, and Leatherback sea turtles. We average about 1000 nests per mile and during the summer we are very busy conducting our nesting surveys. I love doing this work and when working with an endangered species, there is never a dull moment out on the beach. Turtle season officially begins March 1st and ends November 1st. If you would like to learn more about my program, you can go to my website: SINGERISLANDSEATURTLES.ORG , In 2023, we celebrated our 26th year as a non-profit organization. We are a 501 (c) 3 organization and can accept your donation to help us with our turtle program. Pay Pal is available on my website. There is an article in Southern Living magazine for the Sept/Oct. edition 2022, about Palm Beach County Sea Turtles. Part of that article is about my turtle nesting beach on Singer Island. See if you can get a copy. The 40th class reunion was the best. I attended the 10th, 20th and the 25th, which was a 3-day cruise. That was so fun. If there was a 30th, I never heard about it. So thank you to the group who planned this event for the 999 graduates of the Class of 1971. I enjoyed seeing so many of my high school classmates and catching up. Sadly, I missed the 50th reunion.
