Debra's Story
Life
Debra J. Jarvis is a retired fire chief with 28 years fire service experience in Indianapolis and the Chicago suburbs. In 1996 she was among only approximately six women career fire chiefs in the country, with her most recent public safety service as Fire Chief in Oak Brook, Illinois from 1997-2003. Chief Jarvis consults, trains, and does research with public safety and not-for-profit organizations, including the Department of Homeland Security.
Her expertise includes strategic planning; leadership development programs; public safety interagency coordination, budget and project management; developing and implementing hiring, recruitment and promotional systems; labor/management negotiations; and numerous diversity initiatives.

Her professional memberships include International Public Management Association, American Management Association, Healing Racism/Chicago Southland, National Coalition Building InstituteNortheastern Illinois Chapter, Women in the Fire Service, International Association of Fire Chiefs, and Women Chief Fire Officers.
Chief Jarvis is a former Executive Board member of Healing Racism/Chicago Southland. From 2000-2003 she chaired, the International Association of Fire Chiefs Human Relations Committee (IAFC-HR), and remains an active IAFC-HR committee member. She also volunteers as a race relations study circle facilitator in Indianapolis and is a member of Zionsville Presbyterian Church.
Debra and her husband, Greg, live in Cicero across from Morse Reservoir, near their two grandchildren. They enjoy boating, biking, and being the possibility of unity and harmony in the world.
