Debra's Story

Please note that when you sign my guest book, I don't answer because I simply cannot afford the fee to become a full member. It is not because I am ignoring you. It is simply a lack of funds. Also, I don't have any pictures I can easily lay my hands on for a profile. I'm working on it, though. One day you'll see how I look now....& not much has changed really. UPDATE; We picked up & moved recently. No special reason except we felt like seeing a different place, living there for awhile & will move on whenever we feel like it. It's nice to be able to take your house with you when you move. I'm so glad I bought this RV 5 years ago. It has many advantages over a house. And it suits us well. Still have all our friends & will eventually head back to see them, but for now, seeing someplace different, experiencing the life & people appealed to us. We aren't getting any younger, so now is the time to do a bit of traveling. We love it & the animals all seem to enjoy the traveling in comfort. No cages in the back seat of the truck for them anymore. I am no longer Debra Olivares. I am, again, Debra Courtney. To say that I made a mistake is a bit of an understatement. But we all have to live & learn our own lessons. Enough said about that. I am living in the southern United States with my 5 cats & my dog, Noodle. I have many good friends with whom I spend time outdoors fishing, skeet shooting, sipping a little moonshine or apple pie & just generally enjoying life. The bonfires are one of my favorite things---lordy, and the food we eat! Venison, wild hog, wild turkey, fried catfish with all the fixins. Poke greens, cornbread, potato salad, cole slaw, deviled eggs, ice tea by the gallon, & yes, for nearly everyone but me (diabetic), ice cold beer. Summer is here!! Time for the bbq grills & the smoker pit!!! Booooh Yaaaah!! There is a special man, Doug, who is the light of my life. He's rough & tough, a country man who values his woman & his friends. I've never felt so loved & cherished. His values are the same as mine, though we have had totally different lives. It always amazes me in that he grew up literally dirt poor, is illiterate (& please remember that being illiterate does not in any way mean he's stupid-he simply can't read well or write much other than his name) for the most part, the middle child of 11. A former Marine, too. He has done his time in prison & has since avoided problems with the law (well, except for a few bar fights), been an oil field worker and a rock mason for more than 40 years. He has 7 children scattered across the country, a few grand children & two living siblings. He quit his job a few years ago to take care of his dying father for the last year of the old man's life. At his core, he's honest, loyal, believes a man's word is his bond, respectful of anyone who accords him the same & never allows an...Expand for more
yone, man or woman, to show disrespect or to abuse women, children or elder folk. He is actually a pretty scarey man when he's angry with someone. I would not want to be on his bad side, ever. He's big, strong, independent--kind of like John Wayne (who happens to be Doug's idol). Yes, he has a softer side that is reserved for me, my pets & his two dogs & children. He is, truly, a man's man. And he's strong enough to handle me. Yep, I can be quite a handful when I put my mind to it.. The most wonderful thing he ever said to me was that he had finally met "a true woman". I cried when he said it--the highest compliment I have ever been the recipient of, & a day I will never forget. Is my life perfect? No, not quite. Health issues, money issues (is there ever enough $ to make life a little easier?)....but, my life is good. I am as comfortable as I can be under my circumstances, I have a good, strong man by my side, my pets, his dogs, our friends, a roof over my head, a truck that should last a few more years & this wonderful, green, naturally beautiful place to live amongst good, strong people who believe in doing the right thing in all that they do. This is God's country & my life is a country life at just about it's finest. I really couldn't ask for more than I already have. I am fortunate & loved & cherished by Doug & by God. It doesn't get much better than this. But most of all, I am grateful for all I have, grateful for Doug & grateful to God to tossing me back twice so I could finally find the life I have always wished to have. I am at peace. Update: It is coming winter, so the weather is changing, getting colder. I can finally turn off the A/C at night & enjoy the sounds of the wildlife that wanders through every night where I live. The pond is still full of frogs & they do, indeed, make a lot of noise. The black walnuts have almost all fallen, so it's time to gather them up & take them to the sheller in town. That should bring a nice bit of $$ to put aside for Christmas. In the springtime, I will be hunting morels, which are quite valuable & abundant if you know where to hunt for them. I've gotten as much as $30 a pound for them. The walnuts are even more expensive since they grow wild & have to be gathered by hand. No cultivation for them, for sure. This part of the country is teeming with opportunities to make a bit of money if you are willing to go out & work for it. Wood cutting season is in full swing with chainsaws roaring almost constantly. Most people I know use firewood for heat & some for cooking, so there is opportunity for the intrepid to cut ricks & racks of wood for sale. This really is a country life.....I wish you all could experience it the way I can every day. It is amazing, delightful & really, the best way to live.....as independently as possible. Too much technology around for me, for sure..
