Debra's Story

Life Well, the past is the past. I am living in Anderson, CA right now. I recently spent several weeks in the hospital, some of it in a coma. I collapsed in early April due to peritonitis, streptococcal pneumonia, burst appendix, bad gall bladder, grangrene in my intestines and sepsis. While in the coma, my lungs collapsed, I died twice and I had a small cerebral accident (stroke). Before the emergency surgery was done, the Dr.s were trying to notify next of kin. Subsequently, they put in a tracheotomy and a feeding tube. At this point in time, I am disabled. With the in home physical therapy and nursing, I am recovering nicely. While I will always be disabled to some degree, I am determined to not let it stop me from doing the things I need to do for myself. My physical therapist calls me his "project". Just one of these illnesses should have killed me. The several that I had, according to the Dr.s, was a guarantee of a trip to heaven. Since I blew that guarantee out of the water by surviving all this, I can only say that God isn't finished with me yet. That there is something I'm supposed to do, or someone's life I'm supposed to affect, or some lesson I'm supposed to learn before God calls me home. After I came out of the coma, I spent a good deal of my time examining my life. And some of that examination was not pleasant. I can only hope that at the end of this long road to recovery, I am a better person for this experience. Everyone needs some improvement. Mine began when I woke up from the coma. A few words of personal wisdom: DO NOT ignore your health. Eat well, get plenty of rest,...Expand for more
live, love and laugh. Don't sweat the small stuff & don't get so wrapped up in trying to survive that you don't take care of yourself. In trying to survive, I nearly died......love yourself enough to take the very best care of yourself. In the end, all you really have is yourself and God. School Life has been my school. I learn something new every single day. I have found that keeping my mind stimulated with new things has enriched my life in many ways. School memories, yes, there are lots of them. Mostly I remember the times I cut school to run the streets of San Francisco, or go skinny dipping in the American River or Lake Folsom. Of the people from school, well, I didn't know many of you. You all had your lives and your friends, as did I. College Life was my college, also. I did attend the Houston Police Department Academy. Unfortunately, I blew my knee in physical training 3 months into the training to be a police officer. I was unable to finish and receive my badge. In retrospect, it was a good thing. My life changed then and has changed radically several times since. Looking at where I am at now, I'm content with what my life is at this time. I'm thinking my life would have been much more complicated had I been able to become a police officer as I had planned. Workplace I am currently unemployed due to health issues. Military No military service here, folks. I never was much of a conformist growing up. To a certain degree, that is still very much the case. To all who have served, my thanks for your service. I greatly appreciate the freedom I enjoy each day thanks to you.
