Debra's Story
Life
After high school I went on to George Mason Univeristy undergrad and law school and was very involved with Student Government. I also worked for TRW which led to a spot on the Mondale for President campaign right after graduation. After the campaign I went to the Hill and met my husband, Congressman Bill Alexander. We have been blessed over the past 19 years with opportunities to help others through community service.
My passions are my family, gardening, boy scouts, our church, our school, our zoo (3 dogs and 2 cats), horses and our extended family.
Bill's passions are our family, boy scouts (he and his brother were both Eagles, and Alex is working hard to reach that goal), and his work to make the world a better place for the next generation.
As a family we love to do anything that takes us outdoors: our annual trek to OBX, hiking, fishing, camping, biking....
In 1992 Bill traded politics for Sesame Street when our son Alex was born. Now almost 16, Alex is active in scouts and his studies. He is very interested in design and loves math. He is also a good public speaker and debater.... we call him the loophole king. He can't decide whether he will follow mom and dad and go to law school and then run for office, or go the engineering route. Whatever Alex decides will...Expand for more
be good. He is a great soul.
Five years later, we were blessed by the birth of our daughter Ashely. Ashley is a gentle girl who loves dance and shares her mom's love for animals that weigh less than 100 pounds. She sings in our church choir and is an apsiring soccer jock. An equestrian since age 4, she recently announced that "horses are my dream, not hers," so I still am lobbying for a farm in Fauquier County, but there won't be any mother-daughter trail rides everyday after school! That's ok. She is the light of my life in every way.
Bill currently is working on promoting technologies that are good for the environment. His passion in Congress was clean fuels. He continues that work and has expanded his interest to include waste management. We have but one planet to leave to our children.
My first priority is the children. I serve the Rainbow Center, 4-H Therapeutic Riding program as Executive Director. It is a humbling experience to work with children with disABILITIES. Each child is a daily inspriration to me. If you've ever seen the impact of therapeutic riding you will understand when I say that there are angels in the ring every day.
I look forward to catching up with my classmates. It's hard to believe that 30 years have flown by.
God bless!
