Debra's Story
I had pretty big dreams in High School, and a few opportunities to achieve them after graduation. Unfortunately, I also had a lot of responsibilities to my family that took priority. So, instead of going off to pursue my dream, I joined the miliary (the Navy) thinking they would pay my room and board, teach me a trade, and I could just send the money home, but that didn't work out well since my knees were shot. So I came back home and continued working as many jobs as I could get, putting myself through school along the way as best as I could. I started working with disabled students. I got married to a wonderful man. I had beautiful children.Their dreams became my priority. I changed my major from performing arts ...Expand for more
to liberal studies and began working toward a more "grounded" goal, something that would take let me take better care of them and assure their futures the way I'd always wished mine had been. Always, I told myself I could always go back and work toward my dreams later.
But of course, there's no going back.
About 4 years ago I lost my vision. 2 years ago the cause was finally named when I was diagnosed with MS (Multiple Sclerosis). I don't perform or teach at all anymore. I just write. Oddly enough, though, I don't really mind it much. I'm home with my family. I'm here when my husband gets home. I do miss who I used to be, but I like who I am now, nonetheless. I'm happy. I'm loved. You can't ask for more than that.
