Debra's Story

Life After graduation from Poway High School I attended Smith College in Northampton, MA, where I majored in music with a minor in art. I obtained a Master's in Library Science at the University of Southern California and worked in public libraries in the LA County system as a children's librarian. I am currently working at Trinity Presbyterian Church in West Sacramento where I preach and teach a bible study and lead a bereavement small group. I am also involved in Trinity's pastoral care and visitation ministry. I worked for four years as a copy editor for Harcourt Brace on art and English grammar textbooks and then became a K-12 art and music teacher in Montana after my marriage (no kids) ended peacefully in February of '95. My artist father (wood sculptor Clay Johnston and owner of "Clay's Good Earth" in Rancho Bernardo from the 70's-80's) passed away in July of 2003 in Napa, CA (mom preceded him in death in March of '82 in Rancho Bernardo). Ever the charmer, Dad was achieving as an artist (winning a national woodcarving competition at the age of 75) up to the very end. In many ways Dad inspired me in the direction I am moving today. My younger brother, Craig Johnston (Poway High class of 1973), was Chair of the Dept. of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Midwestern University in Glendale, AZ (suburb of Phoenix) at the time of his death from complications of Type I Diabetes on April 11, 2011. Craig's daughter Hope (b. 1982) graduated ...Expand for more
with her M.Arch (Master's in Architecture) from Montana State University (Bozeman) in May of 2006 and married Seth Capon July 4, 2008. Craig's son Christopher ("Chris" b. 1990) is single and working with a landscaping company in Montana. Both Hope and Chris live in Missoula, Montana, where their mother, Sharon Johnston, still lives. Craig and Sharon were divorced at the time of Craig's death. We dearly miss Craig who was not only a brilliant scientist and educator but also the wonderful, hilarious 'life of the party' in his everyday life. He lived every moment of his short life intensely and left the world and his family the richer for it. In 2006 I graduated from San Francisco Theological Seminary with a Master's of Divinity(M.Div.) and a Master's in Theology. I now work at a Presbyterian Church in West Sacramento where I teach, preach, and create liturgical artworks to enhance the experience of worship. I also do pastoral visitation and officiate at memorial services. My work with the sick and dying members of the congregation prepared me to be fully present for my brother the last six weeks of his life. Though heartbreaking, it is a time with him I will always cherish. After spending my entire life on the chubby side, health and the hope of greater longevity finally pushed me to take better care of myself. Today I am an avid swimmer. My irreverent sense of humor persists. I'd love to hear from any of my former classmates.
