Debra's Story

LIFE: This will be an interesting exercise in writing! Depending on which school you are looking at on Classmates.com will depend on whether or not some of this makes sense to you! After living in 10 states and numerous cities during my childhood until college as an Air Force ¿brat¿, I currently reside in Tucson, AZ, home of my collegiate alma mater. The University of Arizona is where I moved (with my family and father¿s once again AF transfer) after high school (Memorial in Tulsa, OK). Here at THE U of A (back when the earth was cooling) I completed my B.S. and M.S. degrees in General Rehabilitation Counseling and specialized in working with deaf and hard of hearing individuals and their families for my Masters with minors in Psychology and Educational Psych. For those of you that knew me from Memorial H.S., I did not know or use American Sign Language back then. In college I could no longer get by on lipreading skills and sitting front and center in my classes. Therefore, I am now fluent in ASL and recently completed (and subsequently taught in) the national Master Mentor Program to train mentors and sign language interpreters for the purpose of improving their skills. Before that, however, I also was the supervisor and educational interpreter for a large school district¿s K-12 D/HH/DeafBlind mainstream program in Olathe, Kansas where I resided for 22 years before moving back to Tucson in 2004. I also worked as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor for the Deaf/HH and DeafBlind for two years while in Kansas. I also lived in the Denver area for a 2 year sabbatical from 1998-2000. But I am getting ahead of myself here. After college, I got married and my husband and I moved to Omaha, NE for 3 years, then El Paso, TX, then to Big Spring, TX where he (Dr. Bern Jones) helped to establish the Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf, a Voc Tech institution, w...Expand for more
ith Dr. Doug Burke from 1980-1984. We still keep in touch with our friends from Big Spring, TX. These moves were all job related (on his part). Sometime between these moves, I managed to birth two wonderful kids, a daughter and son, now (in 2009) ages 26 and 29. No ¿kids¿-in-laws or grandkids yet! Wherever I go, I have tried to ¿bloom where I was planted.¿ Life moving around in the military on the average of every 3 years taught me that. Currently, I am an independent contractor (mentoring, teaching) in my ¿free¿ time and whenever I feel like I can add more to my plate. My biggest responsibility (legal and personal) is being the caregiver for my elderly mother now living near me in Tucson and seeing to her ¿quality of life¿ and dealing with accumulations of a 65 year marriage to my father. My father passed away just 8 months after my folks moved from their home as retirees of 32 years near Tampa/Clearwater, Florida (where I grew up for 6 years) to Tucson to be closer to me in 2006. One of the greatest blessings handed to me was to be able to take my parents to their 65th high school reunions in 2005 back in my home town of Kenton, Ohio. What a ¿trip¿ that was!! So, no, I did not graduate from high school in 1939/40 nor did I graduate from SWCID. I am listed as a "friend" in these Communities. In the Belle Center (Ohio) High School community, I am managing/monitoring this site on behalf of my mother, Laura Marie "LM" Sieg Detwiler, who I believe graduated from Belle Center, Ohio High School around 1939. My father, Henry (Hank) Detwiler, Jr. (USAF-Ret.) and formerly of Kenton, Ohio, passed away April, 2007. (Should there be any messages or pictures posted to Laura, I will be happy to pass them along to her and I would love to hear stories and timelines of Laura Sieg's childhood and school years!) All in all, life is good!! Sure beats the alternative!
