Debra's Story
It seems I should let those lovely people who contacted me after the reunion which, unfortunately, I couldn't attend, have some kind of profile. I'll be as brief as possible (which is rare). I've been in Canada since '73, having spent a couple of horrible years in GA after graduation. I've worked at the university here in Classical Studies, thence to a publishing company in Detroit as an editor in Contemporary Literary Criticism for 30 years, in various capacities. I worked at Joe Louis Arena for the Red Wings organization for 5 years. Since I couldn't afford to buy the pricey tickets, I decided to get a job. It was an outstanding experience but I left when things became less so. Thanks to outsourcing, I was involuntarily retired from what is now Cengage Learning. I have a family of people, am passionate about animals, have furthered a long-standing love of growing beautiful plants and am never bored, having simply adjusted my focus to things I care about profoundly rather than those required to earn a living. That, of course, means the living earned is, well, far less than it might otherwise be, but I've become happier and more content with simplifying my surroundings and existence in general.
I still love to dance and still do it well. Music is the underpinning of things, as are books and movies. Love the classics: Twain, Stevenson, Hawthorne, Fitzgerald, Steinbeck et al. NO romance novels. NO chick flicks. I prefer Marvel, DC, Mission Impossible, Star Trek--adventures!! Everyone these days is into sweary-disgusting, talentless people who talk their "songs", can't sing, and shame the music biz in general. I'm back in the day. People tell me So-and-So is "immortal". I tell them Clapton is immortal. Where is So-and-So now? Don't like slow and...Expand for more
sappy. I can't drive 55. AC/DC, Def Leppard, Queen, Moody Blues, Deep Purple, Van Halen, Bon Jovi, Ozzy, Genesis, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Dire Straits, Allmans, ZZ, Winwood etc. and a lot of peppy pop stuff that's great to step to and doesn't have to be heavy musically or bogged down with a "message." Needless to say, my neighbors, who like "Those Were the Days" and "Margaritaville" , simply can't relate.
Hate cooking. Love painting, plastering, sanding, staining and yard work. No surprise, I have my own style of couture which, while bordering on eccentric and/or age-questionable to some, is what I like, regardless of what sorts of baggy, polyester monstrosities mid-age women are supposed to wear (along with short hair. Noooo.) I'm not good at following instructions, orders or expectations, preferring to put together my own whatever- it-is. I have a room for artistic endeavors in my house, filled with--gasp!--sea paintings, shells, bottles of sand from home, and sea critters (figurines and toys, of course). I miss FL and its beautiful flora and fauna .Maybe after this bizarre year I can visit home again.
Be well, friends and classmates. I remember all of you and think of you often. See you at the 100th!
Addendum: I have recently acquired a vintage mode of transpo about which I'm so geeked: no, not an XKE, a Mustang, or a REAL Corvette (pre-'70), though they have been on my wishlist since the beginning of time. No, it's not merely a quotidian means of getting from A to B; it is....(drum roll, pleeeeeze): a '65 CCM! No stupid 30 gears or screeching hand brakes, but a genuine do-it-yourself one speed, backpedal brake, oldie that I have been seeking in the wasteland of mountain bikes for years (we have zero mountains, hereabouts). I had to share!
