Debra's Story

I married a nice fellow right after high school, and followed that path for about 10 years. After that I married a very interesting man. We have been through some stormy times, but we are still together 31 years later. We have a wonderful son, daughter, and grandson. Having kids completly changed my life, & priorities. It was a blast to watch my son run track, & play football, & watch my daughter run track, & play basketball. Now we look forward to watching our grandson do sports or whatever he chooses. Besides our children, one of my great joys has been dogs. Currently 4 rough collies are part of our family. We show them occasionally, but their value is in their companionship. Through the years, some of my best friends have been dogs. Acceptance, loyalty, and love- what more can you ask of a friend? For most of my adult life, I've worked as a medical technologist. I still work in microbiology. Sometimes it's interesting, mostly it's just a paycheck. I also taught high school biology for one year, but the school was on par with the one in the movie Dangerous Minds. I liked teaching, I just sucked at discipline. They threw my frogs out the window, and set fires in the trash cans, among other things. My dream job would be to work at home as a successful writer of novels, or screenplays -probably in the science fiction genre. I'm working on a novel for high school aged kids. I have to have a creative outlet or I go crazy. I like to paint watercolors, and have done all kinds of crafts from mosiac art to making candles. I've had a few bumps in my life. I was robbed at gunpoint one day walking down the sidewalk ...Expand for more
at TWU. It was one in the afternoon, and someone came up behind me & started yanking on my purse. I held on to it until he ran around & put a gun in my face. No argument there. I only had a dollar, but he got my credit cards, & my car keys. It was a nuisance, thankfully nothing more. A few years later I got a call at work saying my house was on fire. My daughter & grandson were asleep when the fire started and barely made it out. My daughter had to run through a wall of fire carrying her baby & kick out a window (barefooted) to get out. The house was destroyed along with my daughter's little Pom, and some irreplaceable pictures. It was a miracle that my daughter & grandson were not only safe but completely unharmed. None of us enjoy the smell of wood burning anymore. Thanks to AllState we were able to buy another house in a few months. We chose a more rural area. Less than a year after the fire, we watched our new home flood. Our house was full of muddy water, and we had no electricity for a couple of weeks. Some people had it much worse than we did. That area had never flooded before so we had no flood insurance. It was a mess. Now we joke around that it will probably be a tornado next time. You know the old Chinese proverb about whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger- I think it's true. I cannot believe that I'm 57! What happened? It seems like yesterday I was trying to dribblle a basketball down at the old high school gym. Now I'm looking forward to retirement in a couple of years. It's such a short trip for us here on earth. I hope I've done some good, but either way I'm glad Jesus has my back.
