Debra's Story

Life I can't believe it's been 23 years since graduation. How time flies... My life since high school has had some ups and downs...the same is true for all of us I'm sure. I married my high school sweetheart (from a different school) at age 20. We welcomed our precious baby boy into our family in 1988. Unfortunately that marriage didn't last and we divorced in 1991. I met my second husband, Steve, while I was working at K-Mart as the Apparel Manager...he was one of the Hard Lines Managers. We fell head over heels in love and knew we would be married on our first date. We married in 1992. Steve and I had 2 beautiful sons together. Life was very good. I could not bear the thought of leaving my babies and going to work so I became a full-time mommy...one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. I was blessed to be able to stay home and be a part of every milestone with them. Steve and I eventually started our own painting and remodeling company. I handled the books and the scheduling and he did the work. It worked out very well for us. It was nice to be able to schedule days off when WE wanted to...a benefit of being your own boss. Life was going great. We had the family we always wanted and we were very happy. Steve went to work on August 7th, 2003 and fell off the ladder he was working from. He died the next day from brain injuries sustained from the fall. My life and the lives of our 3 children were shattered. The kids were only 9, 10 and 15 when their Daddy died. untary single mother. My husband's death is the hardest thing I have ever gone through in my life. We were married for 12 years and were best freinds and everything to each other...we were truly a happy couple, so much in love and still had that giddy love even after 12 years. Like I said, my life was shattered, OUR future hopes and dreams silenced. I didn't know how I would be able to go on without him. My faith and trust in God is soley what got me through each and every day. I know that I will see him again on the other side. I joined a grief support group that was soley for widows and widowers. I became friends with a man that I met through the support group. He had lost his wife in a car accident in 2001. We shared many tears together, shared our inner most thoughts with one another, shared our stories and our pain. We became the best of friends from a tragic situation. Little by little we realized that what we had was much more than friendship...we fell in love. Tom and I married a little over a year ago. Neither of us thought it would be possible to be happy again after losing our spouses...but not only is it possible, it is a reality. We both now know that life can be cut short in an instant so we love deeper and stronger and never pass up a chance to say "I Love You" to each other. Our love is truly a blessing from God. I now have 5 sons...my 3 bio children and now my 2 bonus sons. We are now looking forward to the future again, with shared hopes and dreams and we will always carry Steve and Serena in our hearts.
