Debra's Story

Hi, everyone from the Class of 1970...it is great to have this website to help connect with friends from the past. Gosh, it doesn't seem like 40 years has past since we walked out of the ol' Keith-Albee theater in June of 1970. I know that I've not seen some of our classmates since that very day. I do remember that it was hot as hades that day...ha ha Married Justin Louis Ray (class of 68) on September 29th, 1970 and then December 1970, Justin and I were living in Mannheim, Germany while Justin was serving in the U.S. Army. That was a crazy time.....young and in love living in a country that I could not speak the native language! We have two beautiful daughters, Jessica Eden Ray, 35, and Amanda Erin Johnson, 27, both living in Cabell county. We have two precious grandchildren and we are very blessed to be able to watch them grow. Justin and I returned to Huntington and started attending Marshall. Justin became involved in the ROTC program and by the time he graduated Marshall, he had obtained a commission in the U.S. Army as a Medical Service Corps officer and we were off again traveling courtesy of the United States Army. Justin retired out of the active army in 1990; continued serving in the Reserves , and finally retired as Lieutenant Colonel in the late 90's. During our time in the military, I obtained my R.N. degree in Texas (A.D.N.) and my B.S.N. , finally, in 2000. Have been working at St. Marys Medical Center since 1991 and love every minute of it! I am currently working in the Surgical Recovery Room three nights a week; I am definitely a night owl and have been since high school. The one person I would like to see again most of all would be Kathie Dale Rowe. She was a very close friend all during high school and we, sadly, lost contact with each other after graduation. I got married and I think her family moved from Barboursville. If anyone has any information about Kathie, I would appreciate a note. Would love to contact her and catch up..... I would like to share a childhood memory that I will never forget. When I was just starting the 3rd grade, my family moved to Barboursville. I lived in a small subdivision that most people would recognize today. I lived on Miller drive; the subdivision is today across from the Kroger store on route 60....I was somewhat of a tomboy in my early years, but one of my most favorite people in all the world is one of the first friends I made when I moved into our new house. His name is Harold Gatlin. Some of the sweetest, most precious memories I have of growing up on Miller drive were given to me by Harold. Our friendship had its ups and downs through our sch...Expand for more
ool years, but I have always had Harold in my heart. What a precious friend he was to me; I didn't really appreciate that fact until very many years later in life and for that, I am truly sorry. I cherish the wonderful times of my childhood while living on Miller Drive. I have driven through our old neighborhood many times over the years and it serves to remind me how everything changes in life. Justin and I live in Milton now and every once in awhile he will say "I can't believe we bought property in Milton, of all places. I remember our football days and how we hated the Milton Greyhounds with a passion. Ironic that we now live here." TRUST ME....HE remains a Barboursville Pirate to this very day! ha ha...Well, this is a little story of bits and pieces of my life. Would like to hear from other classmates and look forward to the 40th reunion next year. We have never really been in the state to attend any of the previous reunions that may have been held. God Bless Us Everyone....and GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!! Just to continue my story with a glimpse of my obsessions.....hmmmmmmm I love, love, LOVE football, college and professional, professional bull riding( no, I don't do it...ha ha)...I enjoy keeping up with the Marshall players that are now in the NFL.....have to say that Chad Pennington, Miami Fish (dolphins) is one of my favorites....what a great role model for young people...Used to REALLY like the Philadelphia Eagles, but will watch cautiously since Michael Vick is on the Roster....what do you all think about that situation? I have the most beautiful miniature Australian Shepherd, and his name is "Little", hope to add pictures soon. Enjoy astronomy and want to join a local Star Club. I think they have one at Huntington High. Justin and I like to garden....I love the taste of home grown tomatoes. won't eat tomatoes until next summer, if I can help it... When I was in junior high school, I always wanted to be the first woman astronaut! Yeah right, like that would happen when I realized that I would have to have a BOAT LOAD of math, physics, astrophysics, etc., in college! My mother, God bless her soul, always encouraged me to "reach for the stars" and "go for it"....well, I didn't get quite as far as the stars...but that was okay. I have been very happy in life and marriage to Justin has been a real hoot, believe me. I think that everyone at my high school reunion would be surprised to learn that I love to ride motorcycles and have owned a few over the years. Justin and I travelled on a Harley Sportster 1000 in 1990 to Sturgis, South Dakota, to attend the 50th anniversary party....what a wild time THAT was....
