Debra's Story

Life On December 31, 1954, I was born in Menomonie, Wisconsin, the youngest of 14 children! People have always asked me if I am Catholic because my parents had so many children. To which I respond, “"My parents were working on perfection, and when they FINALLY had me they said, 'Okay, we can stop now!'" At any rate, it was an experience being from such a large family. I learned early on how to share and how to be a team player. I also learned about hand-me-downs and waiting for my turn in the bathroom! I loved being raised in a small town! Some of my fondest memories are of the days that I attended school in Elmwood, and the summers in between. I loved learning how to read so I could then spend hours in the tiny town library reading about the adventures of the Hardy Boys, while listening to the crackling of the potbellied wood stove in the corner. I loved memorizing the multiplication tables in fourth grade so that I could later goof off in Mr. Bjurquist'’s Freshman algebra class because I had a good foundation. I loved being chosen early on for athletic games at recess because I was just as good as the top male athletes. Women power at 9! What did I love most about Elmwood as a kid? I could walk all over the town and feel safe. I knew most everyone that lived in town---what they did for a living, how they treated their neighbors, and when I needed to respect their privacy. I loved the striped barber shop poles, the grocery stores, the hardware stores, the restaurant, the auditorium, the creamery, the gas stations, …the Christmas trees along Main Street, the town celebrations, the park full of butternut trees, the school. By the time I was in third grade, I knew that I wanted to go to college to be a teacher. I had no idea then of the variables involved, mostly money; but with the innocence of youth, I went after the dream. It’'s been a few years since then, but those years have brought me three degrees, numerous jobs in education, and the chance to make a difference in the lives of others who may have followed their own third-grade dreams. The solid educational foundation that each, and every, teacher at Elmwood Area Schools helped me develop is being passed forward in my own work. That is what I love most about being from Elmwood. Do you remember these: cruising down Main Street seeing if you could coast from the south side to the stop sign in the center of downtown? paying 35 cents (or less) for a gallon of gas? sitting on Grumpy's Corner chatting with friends? walking to the "Little Store" (...Expand for more
Ottman's) for lunch? buying penny candy while you were there? going on the carnival rides at the Elmwood "Stars and Stripes" celebration? seeing Vern Gogne and The Crusher wrestle in a ring near the Auditorium? roller skating in the Auditorium and catching a cold drink of water in the fountain? wading in the river under the Black Bridge and the White Bridge? taking a class tour of the Elmwood Creamery? skating at the ice skating rink and warming up in the old shack that had a wood burning stove in it? singing during the elementary Christmas program? seeing the Raider Field and "over the bank" flooded out in the spring up over the road? walking through the storm ditch from one end to the other? walking through "Meboe's Tunnel" to the river? leaving "May Day" baskets on friends' doorsteps and running? seeing the Christmas trees all lit up along both sides of the downtown area? watching a play put on and acted out by the Elmwood Booster Club? sitting on the NSP steps downtown with friends? Newton9? ice skating on the streets all over town? toboganning down the Catholic Church hill? trying to find a ride to the Spring Valley pool or to Welch's Point in the summer? going to the 5 & 10 Cent Store in Menomonie and sitting at the soda fountain? seeing the "chutes" send change and a receipt to the check out clerk at Montgomery Wards in Menomonie? sock hops ("snow ball") and Sadie Hawkins dances, boys on one side of the gym and girls on the other? marching around the streets of Elmwood in the band for parades and half-times practice? the Rock Elm Methodist Church ice cream socials? buying ice cream cones at Butternut Park? making the merry-go-round there zigzag back and forth? being told it was illegal to pick violets (state flower) that grew in the wild? visiting Connell's Apple Orchard every fall...how that first apple tasted and the apple smells in the warehouse? daring friends to climb up the town tower and ring the bell? "Outer Limits" and the "Twilight Zone" streets in Elmwood? cars parked all over Main Street's down town area? when we actually had 5-7 bars open at the same time? a field trip to Crystal Cave and being disappointed after hearing about it for so long? the lumber yard, feed mill, train pavillion, Helmeller's, Lamson's, Marcella's/Lucky's Variety Store, the Elmwood Cafe, Rhiel's Furniture? Raider buttons? Homecoming parades and pep rallies? parties in someone's field? after-game trips to Menomonie for pizza? how good it felt when we had a snow day? What else do you remember...
