Dee's Story

Life Life certainly has led me on a crazy path, from Hellertown to Houston, Texas with a couple stops in between. After high school I went to Bloomsburg State Univ. for a year; came home for the summer and got a job with Bell Telephone in their Allentown business office. The following summer I went to Rochester, NY to visit my college roomie and ended up getting a job at Eastman Kodak. In 1971, I met my husband, James Given, and we were married in 1974. Three years later, Matthew came into our lives and I "retired" from my job with Computer Consoles to become a full-time mother. During my pregnancy with Robert, Jim changed jobs and he went to Williamsport, PA while I stayed in Rochester to sell the house and wait for the arrival of Robert. Jim made it back in time to witness the arrival of Robert and to help us move 12 days later. We had nowhere to go in Williamsport, so the boys and I went to Bethlehem to stay with mom and dad until we could find a house. Three months later we moved into our house in Williamsport and I swore no one was getting me to go anywhere for quite some time. In 1982, our third son, David, died during labor and a great sadness filled our lives. We pretty much figured our family was complete and I kept busy with the boys and their activities. Much to our surprise, Kelly came along in 1985 to be both a joy and a pain to her brothers. As the youngest, and only girl, she was spoiled rotten. My pet name for her is Brat. *grin* Life became full of...Expand for more
little league, soccer, paper routes, boy scouts, girl scouts and Sunday school. Dee became the "worlds biggest volunteer" getting involved with all of their activities and the PTO board. Time passed and Matt became an Eagle Scout much to our surprise and joy. He graduated from high school and headed off to Rochester Institute of Technology. Robert took over both his and Matt's paper routes and also worked evenings at the Ford dealership cleaning up the maintenance garage. Jim and I parted ways in 1996 and Kelly and I moved to Houston. A year later I married Michael Pankonien and we lived in the suburb of Kingwood so that Kelly would be in a good school district. About four years ago we bought our house in Katy and moved in a week after we took Kelly to the University of Texas in San Antonio. She had to call home to get her new address to fill out her forms for college. lol My folks still live in Bethlehem and I get back there every once in a while. I miss Hellertown and the small-town life, but I sure don't miss the snow. Life has been good. I've had the opportunity to travel some, both for work and for pleasure. I have a lot of internet friends from all over and have been able to visit some of them. Last summer, Sherri (an internet friend) and I went to Hawaii for two weeks and had a wonderful time. We hope to go again this year and try some of the things we didn't have time for last year. If any of ya'll are passing through Houston......I'd love to see you.
