Deen's Story

Life Hi 1966 Classmates: It's been a long time since 1986, the 20th reunion. Hope to hear from all of my 1966 classmates out there! Currently living in Palmdale, FL since 2002. It's a small, rural outpost located between Lake Placid and Moore Haven, FL on Rt. 27. I'm divorced, and my son, Eric lives in Clearwater. My significant other, Lynne, owns a small ranch nearby with horses, 2 dogs, chickens, (but absolutely NO hogs). There are always plenty of fresh, brown eggs for breakfast! Lived in the Tampa Bay area for about 25 years, then moved to Fairfield, CT for 8 years (was curious to find where all those winter snowbirds get all of their wisdom from). Moved back to FL in 2002, and then somehow landed in Glades County, Palmdale. Survived the hurricanes of 2004 and 2005, but my school was out of commission for 2 months after Hurricane Wilma. Palmdale is one of the last frontiers in Florida. I currently live a unique lifestyle in my Itasca RV /motorhome (full timer, I'm called) at a beautiful RV park and ranch on the edge of the Everglades. There was an old hanger with several small aircraft and a 1,200 ft. grass airstrip, but all were lost during Hurricane Wilma. So much for those fun, barnstorming weekends. Palmdale is surrounded by Lykes' 300,000 acre cattle and citrus ranch, and Fisheating Creek Wildlife Management Area. I stay very busy with mt. biking, kayaking, hiking, ham radio, photography, writing, and protecting the Fisheating Creek State Park /WMA. It's the most pristine wilderness area left in Flor...Expand for more
ida! Also enjoy riding horses, and attending the annual Sun and Fun airshow in Lakeland for a few great days in April. Another favorite destination is Ft. DeSoto State park, an island south of St. Pete. Highly recommended! School Attended elementary schools in Columbus, OH, Gridley, CA, and then returned to live on my family's farm in Spring Lake. Started 3rd grade at Spring Lake Elementary, a 3-room country schoolhouse with a huge bell out front. What a memory (1956) to ring the huge bell, starting the school day. Then on to Hernando Jr. Hi School, and finally down the hill to HHS. Not much remains of the original HHS now, and Spring Lake Elementary is just a fond memory. Does anyone know what ever happened to the old bell? College After Viet Nam, attended St. Petersburg Jr. College in Clearwater, then USF Tampa (BA, Business and Accounting). Earned Masters in history at CT State Univ, New Haven, in 2000. Workplace Worked in careers in the business world, commercial real estate, and owned an art framing studio. Now working on a final career in teaching, hope to retire in 5 or 6 years. Military Enlisted in the United States Navy after graduating from HHS in 1966. First, went to Pensacola Naval Air Station, home of the Blue Angels and beautiful beaches. Then to Little Creek, VA. for SERE school, counterinsurgency, and survival training. From there, on to the war in DaNang, Viet Nam in 1968 and 1969. Also traveled to Anchorage, AK, Okinowa, Guam, the Philippines, and Taiwan. My specialty, communications. GO NAVY!
