Deirdre's Story
We plan, the gods laugh. I did not expect to settle in Greenville after college, but here I am. After high school, I moved to New Mexico to attend Eastern New Mexico University on a full scholarship and, for four years, I thought I'd stay in the Southwest. However, Life has a way of saying "No, you're going to go this direction instead" and so far, it's always worked out for me.
I make my living as a social work supervisor and still try to make time for music and community theater as I can (although it's been a while since I've found time). I like to think the kind of person I am hasn't changed much since high school. I'm still independent, strong-willed and tend to be a bit of a free spirit but I'm way more diplomatic and not nearly as outspoken as I was - which is probably a good thing. When I run into former classmates, the reactions I get are divided pretty equally between "wow, yo...Expand for more
u haven't changed a bit" and "wow, I didn't recognize you." I'm not really sure what that means...
I'm fortunate to be married to Joel Schinke, a man who loves to travel as much as I do. In the almost twelve years we've been married, we've been to Jamaica (where we got married), Ireland, Italy, Germany, Brazil, Belize, back to Jamaica (for our 10th anniversary) and the Cayman Islands.
In 1999, I legally change my last name to my mother's maiden name. (It's complicated.) Fortunately, my amazing husband understood how important it was for me to keep this name when we got married in 2001. It sometimes confuses people that we are married and have different last names (which surprises me, considering how common it's becoming) but it makes answering the phone easier. If the person on the other end asks for Joel Grennan or Deirdre Schinke, we know it probably isn't anyone we want to talk to!
