Denise's Story

Life I moved to Yakima, Wa. after graduation. Started working at a bank in 1973, got married in 1980 to Dave Mettie & settled in Selah, Wa. , we had son Evan in 1983, daughters Kira in 1987 & Breanne in 1989. I was a stay at home mom until Bre was in kindergarten, then worked part time until 2000. We built a new house and there went my life of leisure! I was the Sales & Service Manager for US Bank in Selah Wa. until our son was critically injured in Iraq on 01-01-06. This was Evans 2nd deployment with the Army, 101st airborne, air assault. Evan received a severe Traumatic Brain injury from a suicide car bomber, I have been by his side in various hospitals this whole year. We just got to Palo Alto, Ca. TBI rehab on 11-30-06. I have a wonderful husband, Dave is a computer Graphics designer & photographer. Two beautiful daughters, Kira is 19, lives in Ellensburg Wa. and is a hair stylist, she has done cross country running, fastpitch, swimteam, lifeguard & dancing-jazz,tap & ballet. Breanne is 17, she's a senior this year and involved with varsity fastpitch, dances-jazz, tap, ballet, was on danceteam & drillteam and currently teaches at the dance studio after school. sical Rehab. We have truly been blessed with wonderful children. I work full time with Evan and support our Wounded Warriors, Dave is still with Baumgardners. Dave & I are looking forward to spending some time together, Golfing, camping & hiking, working in the yard and taking mini trips (Vegas!) Dave just got back from Sawgrass at Jacksonville Fl, he was pretty excited to play golf on the pro greens, (I went in November and enjoyed the Spa) both our trips were retreats provided by Wounded Warrior Project, a phenomenal organization for our Wounded men & women. 2014 A big jump forward, lol, Dave & I are both retired, Evan lives with us and requires 24/7 care. I am a very vocal advocate for our Wounded Warriors, not to mention a thorn in the VA's side.:) I have appeared before the Senate in a hearing on the inadequacies of the DOD & VA in helping our severely injured Warrior's and was on a team of the Army's AW2 program to bring guidelines together for caregivers. Our daughters are beautiful young women, Kira is starting Nursing School this fall and she & Nick presented us with our first grandchild, Makenna, she is 10 months old and a true joy. Breanne is working as an Optician Assistant, she has 1 quarter left at Central Washington University for her degree, it's a toss up on which direction she will go, either Optometry or Physical Therapy. Whatever they do, we keep telling them, DO WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY!!! Life is to short not to be happy...
