Denise's Story

Well, I accidentally posted part of this in the wrong place first. After skipping senior year, I attended Drew University and majored in Mathematics. I met my husband (Geoff Sobering) through a mutual friend the summer after my sophomore year. We were engaged within 4 months. After graduating from Drew, I lived with his parents while Geoff finished school. I taught at the local high school in Madison, NJ for 6 months. I applied for a graduate student internship with the government laboratory system. I landed a job with Argonne National Laboratories in Idaho Falls, ID. I worked there for 6 months in the Criticality Hazards Control Section. I was in charge of deciding and justifying transport approval of spent nuclear fuel rods. They wanted me to switch to nuclear engineering, but I didn't want to go there. I joined Geoff in Madison, WI to attend graduate school in Statistics. We got married in NJ in 1983. He eventually finished his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, sailing was more fun than the lab. When he got a job offer at the National Institutes of Health in Biomedical Engineering in the In Vivo NMR Research Center, we moved to MD. I got a job running the laboratory and we worked together there until Geoff got a position at GE Medical Systems in Waukesha, WI. So we returned to WI. We've been back for 21 years now. A few school and job changes later, Geoff works for a company which makes atom probes for research. I run our small business (Geoff sells Blo-karts and parts for them as well as parts for Laser sail boats and DN iceboats, he also does photography at air shows and other action sports events, he volunt...Expand for more
eers for a pyrotechnic company (which got him a free trip to Australia for over two weeks last year), I consult, teach, judge horse shows and sell jewelry and custom clothing. My spare time is spent volunteering with several non-profits and riding my horse. I am working my way up the Dressage Levels with Splash and while we won't get to the Olympics, we are getting closer to being able to reach the top at the local level. I am bringing a former US Olympic Coach to the area next month to work with one of the non-profit groups and help me with some of my remaining riding issues. The weekend after that I am working with an international level Dressage judge. Then in June, I'm working with an international level rider and trainer. My mother wants to see us ride at Devon someday:) I get back to NJ very rarely. I will be back to visit Mom sometime late Summer or early Fall. She has been out several times to visit, once when I broke my pelvis and again when I had stomach surgery. The past few years have been difficult health wise. The rest of the family is still living in NJ. Chris is married and has two children. Her son has a daughter who is a couple of years old and her daughter has a son on the way any moment. George is married and doing okay. Ed, unfortunately, died of epilepsy 15 years ago. He was briefly married after also graduating from Drew University. Joann has two children and is doing okay. Geoff and I never had children. We have had a series of rescue cats over the years. We currently have three. Between Geoff's sailing hobbies, my horse obsession and the business, life is usually pretty hectic for me.
