Dennis's Story
Summer 66 worked at Maid of the Mist. First time I ever rode under Falls. Fall of 66 off to Boston/Cambridge. Joined Phi Sigma Kappa, greatly improving my people skills. Could look down onto the Fenway Park infield from fraternity annex. Freshman year met my future wife, in a BU dorm 2 houses down. Lucky # 21 on Uncle Sam's VNam lottery. Pop said NYANG had openings in NF, joined when I saw so many happy faces. Found out later it was because they were being let out after being in VNam. After 5 yrs at MIT, had BSs in Mech E and Metallurgy. Worked college summers at Union Carbide NF. Grad school at Carnegie Mellon U in Pittsburg, Metallurgy and Materials Science. and a sprout on they way, needed a job. DuPont offered same pay to live in Wilmington DE, or Aiken SC, where we could buy a new brick, airconditioned 3 br house for $17,500 at 3%. Easiest choice in my life. Worked at DOE site there for 35 years, 17 with DuPont rest with Westinghouse and contract sucessors. In the mean time had 2 boys and a daughter, now with 6 grand kids under 10. Retired 10 years ago as Senior Fellow Scientist, Advisoy Engineer. While there I was incharge of the engineering group that produced the Pu fuel for the Galileo and Ullyses space probes. Also worked in USSR, and later Russia. Later 2/3 career spent developing glass formulas and equipment to dispose of nuclear waste. Retired to Folly Beach, near Charleston SC. Come on Down ! The water is fine !
